Christmas Pantomime Unfortunately this year we did not get very much interest for the Family Christmas Pantomime trip to Southport Theatre but we were still prepared to go ahead with low numbers as we felt it was a shame for the interested families to miss out. Since families expressed their interest we have discovered that one of the nursery children has planned a birthday party on the same day. Unfortunately we will not be able to go ahead with the trip this year but will offer it again next year. Annual Parent Questionnaire Thank you to the parents that completed the questionnaire and returned it to us. We have looked at the responses as a whole staff team and have discussed ways that we can improve to address the comments made on the questionnaire. Your opinions are very valuable to us and help us to improve on what we offer for you and your child. We will shortly be sending home the results from the questionnaire and our actions. As always, please get in touch if you have any concerns or suggestions. Christmas party days Our P.M Christmas party will be on Tues 15th December in the afternoon with a visit from Father Christmas at 3.00pm and the A.M Christmas Party will be on Thursday 17 th December with a visit from Father Christmas at 11.00am. Any nursery children who do not attend nursery on these days will shortly receive an invitation to one of the parties. Parents are welcome to come along to see their child receive their gift from Father Christmas. In previous years we have asked parents to provide a wrapped present for their child to receive from Father Christmas but this year we have been able to purchase the gifts through the rewards we have earned from the Scholastic book orders that parents made, so thank you all for your orders. Children can come along to their party in their Christmas jumpers. Nursery Policies & Procedures Each newsletter we will attach two of our policies onto the newsletter for you to read at home. All policies and procedures are in the nursery and can be viewed at any time so please ask if there is one in particular that you would like to view. This month we attach: Allergies & Allergic reaction Adverse Weather Allergies and Allergic Reactions EYFS: 3.47, 3.45 At Learning Curves Nursery we are aware that children may have or develop an allergy resulting in an allergic reaction. Our aims are to ensure allergic reactions are minimised or, where possible, prevented and that staff are fully aware of how to support a child who may be having an allergic reaction. Our procedures Our staff are made aware of the signs and symptoms of a possible allergic reaction in case of an unknown or first reaction in a child. These may include a rash or hives, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea, itchy skin, runny eyes, shortness of breath, chest pain, swelling of the mouth or tongue, swelling to the airways to the lungs, wheezing and anaphylaxis We ask parents to share all information about allergic reactions and allergies on their child’s registration form We share all information with all staff and keep an allergy chart in the kitchen and at the front of the Medication file. Where a child has a known allergy, the nursery manager will carry out a full Allergy Risk Assessment Procedure and complete a Care Plan with the parent and share this information with all staff All food prepared for a child with a specific allergy is prepared in an area where there is no chance of contamination and served on equipment that has not been in contact with this specific food type, e.g. nuts All of this information is shared with our External caterers. The manager, caterer and parents will work together to ensure a child with specific food allergies receives no food at nursery that may harm them. This may include designing an appropriate menu or substituting specific meals on the current nursery menu Seating will be monitored for children with allergies. Where deemed appropriate staff will sit with children who have allergies and where age/stage appropriate staff will discuss food allergies and the potential risks If a child has an allergic reaction to food, a bee or wasp sting, plant etc. a first-aid trained member of staff will act quickly and administer the appropriate treatment, where necessary. We will inform parents and record the information in the incident book. If an allergic reaction requires specialist treatment, e.g. an EpiPen, then at least two members of staff working directly with the child and the manager will receive specific medical training to be able to administer the treatment to each individual child. Food Information Regulations 2014 From 13 December 2014, we will incorporate additional procedures in line with the Food Information Regulations 2014 (FIR). We will display our weekly menus on the Parent Information Board. Transporting children to hospital procedures The nursery manager/staff member must: Call for an ambulance immediately if the allergic reaction is severe. DO NOT attempt to transport the sick child in your own vehicle Whilst waiting for the ambulance, contact the parent(s) and arrange to meet them at the hospital Arrange for the most appropriate member of staff to accompany the child taking with them any relevant information such as registration forms, relevant Emergency Medication forms, medication and the child’s comforter. Redeploy staff if necessary to ensure there is adequate staff deployment to care for the remaining children. This may mean temporarily grouping the children together Inform a member of the management team immediately Remain calm at all times. Children who witness an incident may well be affected by it and may need lots of cuddles and reassurance. Staff may also require additional support following the accident. Adverse Weather EYFS: 3.58 At Learning Curves Nursery we have an adverse weather policy in place to ensure our nursery is prepared for all weather conditions that might affect the running of the nursery such as floods, snow and heat waves. If any of these incidents impact on the ability of the nursery to open or operate, we will contact parents via telephone or text message. We will not take children outdoors where we judge that weather conditions make it unsafe to do so. Flood In the case of a flood we will follow our critical incident procedure to enable all children and staff to be safe and continuity of care to be planned for. Snow or other severe weather If high snowfall, or another severe weather condition such as dense fog, is threatened during a nursery day then the manager will take the decision as to whether to close the nursery. This decision will take into account the safety of the children, their parents and the staff team. In the event of a planned closure during the nursery day, we will contact all parents to arrange for collection of their child. In the event of staff shortages due to snow or other severe weather we will contact all available off duty staff and/or agency staff and group the children differently until they are able to arrive. If we are unable to maintain statutory ratio requirements after all avenues are explored we will contact Ofsted to inform them of this issue, recording all details. If we feel the safety, health or welfare of the children is compromised then we will take the decision to close the nursery. Heat wave Please refer to our sun care policy.
