Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton (WRSE) - Internship Program
Position: Wildlife Rehabilitator Intern
Time Period: April 2016– October 2016
Hours: 20 – 40 hr per week
Number of Positions Available: 30
Start dates: April 1, May 1, & June 1
Minimum commitment: 3 months
WRSE is seeking enthusiastic people who love wildlife, the outdoors, have a strong desire to
learn and work well in a team environment, to assist us in maintaining the best care possible
for our patients.
The Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton is a non-partisan, charitable organization that
provides compassionate care for injured and orphaned wildlife and educates the public on the
importance of wildlife in our community. We provide a high standard of care to a wide variety
of native and migratory species. Approximately 80% of our patients are wild birds (waterfowl,
birds of prey, songbirds) and 20% small mammals (squirrels, porcupines, fox).
Duties
Working under the supervision of the Animal Care Manager or appropriately identified staff,
interns will be helping wildlife by: preparing appropriate species’ diets & monitoring food
intake, enclosure setup & cleaning, habitat enrichment, recording & charting progress,
administering medications; providing intense neonate care for baby birds, mammals and
ducklings; specialized waterfowl care, daily laundry and cleaning duties, indoor and outdoor
facility maintenance and gardening.
Interns are required to follow all policy, procedures and protocols at the WRSE to ensure a high
standard of animal care. Interns will also interact with and work with other facility volunteers,
summer students and casual relief staff.
Location
Interns may apply to work at the WRSE Hospital in Edmonton or the Rehab Centre in Spruce
Grove. Positions will start in April, May, and June and require a minimum of 20 hrs to a
maximum of 40 hrs per week with a 3, 4, 5 or 6 month commitment.
Conditions
All positions are voluntary, NO salary is offered. You may receive a $1000.00 bursary from SCIP
(Serving Communities Internship Program) if you qualify under their program. Please see below
for more details. Housing and transportation is not provided.
Qualifications:
 Minimum age of 19 years of age or older
 Experience or coursework in: biological or environmental sciences, wildlife rehabilitation
or management, veterinary medicine, animal welfare or husbandry
 Current tetanus vaccination, good physical health, and stamina

Rabies vaccination an asset
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently and as a team member
Ability to be motivated, flexible and patient in a highly demanding work environment
Criminal record check
Must provide references
