Welcome to English! We’re looking forward to working with all of you this year. We know that with hard work,
cooperation and participation this year will be a great one!
Course Description: English 5-6 continues the study of structural elements of fiction and nonfiction thorough the analysis of
literary periods and their subsequent social values. The literature of the United States and the Americas is emphasized. The
six traits of writing are refined in the context of analytical and persuasive writing. Students engage in self-evaluation and
respond to audience feedback on their speaking and listening skills. Media forms are examined for their impact on all
aspects of society.
Co-Teaching Classroom: In a co-teaching classroom, two certified teachers plan and teach in one room. Having two teacher
available allows students to receive more individualized instruction, supports more academic diversity, and provides a
greater opportunity for students to achieve success. Feel free to contact either teacher to get a more detailed description.
This year, Mr. Trujillo and Mr. Williamson will be co-teaching together periods 1, 2 and 6.
Required Text: McDougal Littell-American Literature
Course Materials: Students are expected to have the following materials: spiral notebook, binder with looseleaf paper, blue
or black pen, pencil, and a novel for S.S.R. (Sustained Silent Reading).
Grading System:
Each Nine Weeks:
Semester Grade:
Tests/Projects: 40%
1st: Term/Quarter=45%
Practice (Homework/Classwork): 30%
2nd: Term/Quarter=45%
Participation: 20%
CRT=10%

Extra Credit: Extra credit will occasionally be offered, but not to exceed 2% of the total quarter/semester grade.
 Accommodations and modifications will be included per IEP/504 plans.
Title I Program: Academic tutoring and test preparation is available to all students. Additional support for passing classes
and graduating on time is the intent of these services. Support through Title I funding is available in the areas of: math,
reading and English. If interested, please contact the Principal, Ricardo Cordova, at 602-764-3035, or Assistant Principal for
Instruction, Marisol Miller, at 602-764-3032 for additional information.
Make-up Policy: It is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to contact the teacher for make-up assignments before or after
school or via email. If the absence is excused, students may make up work the following day and will be given the amount
of days missed to complete it (i.e. one day absent = one additional day to complete the assignment). The absence must be
excused by the office (parent or guardian must call in on behalf of student) OR a letter from a parent or guardian must
accompany the work with an explanation for the absence.
Late-Work Policy: Late homework or classwork will not be accepted without an excused absence. Students who are
missing major projects and tests may be required to attend mandatory tutoring until the work is made-up. Late work may
negatively impact a student’s grade.
Policy on Academic Integrity: Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, forgery, and
lying.
A student shall not use, or attempt to use, the academic work, or research of another person and represent it as his
own. Academic cheating, including the use of electronic devices, may result in loss of credit.
A student shall not use, or attempt to use, the identity or signature of another person and represent it as his own for
his own benefit or with intent to defraud.
A student shall not make an untrue statement with intent to deceive or create a false or misleading impression.
Any offense will be dealt with as follows:
All offenses will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Severity of the offense will determine length of detention,
suspension, loss of credit, or expulsion.
Attendance and Tardy Policy: “80% of success is just showing up” –Woody Allen
“Absent” is defined as nonattendance in an assigned class or activity for more than one-half of the period. (PUHSD
Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)
“Tardy” is defined as not being in the assigned class or activity when the tardy bell has finished ringing. (PUHSD
Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)
Students may fail the class for the semester in any course, when reaching a total of 12 excused/unexcused absences
and after school-documented interventions have been exhausted. (Student Procedures Handbook page 22)
Because students who attend school regularly are academically better prepared, good attendance is mandatory for this
class. As according to our district attendance policy, more than 12 absences could result in being dropped from this
class OR receiving no credit for this class. The tardy and absent policies as outlined in the Student Handbook will be
followed including the use of HART. Students with 12 or more absences will have the opportunity to make up
absences during Saturday School and HART. All tardies will result in being assigned lunch HART.
Classroom Guidelines:
1. I have the ability to learn.
2. I can complete my work neatly and on time.
3. I can use positive language and phrases.
4. I will respect myself and others in the classroom at all times.
Electronics: The school electronic policy will be enforced. Ipods and other music players should be left at home. All cellphones must be on silent or off and cannot be visible in class. Any electronics seen in the classroom may be confiscated and
turned into the Dean’s office. They will ONLY be returned to a parent or guardian.
Extra Help: If you are having trouble, ask for help during class or via email. In addition, your teachers are happy to arrange
appointments for extra help.
