Math 30-2 Course Outline

Teacher: Mrs. Deanna Sample

Email: dsample@redeemer.ab.ca

Welcome to Math 30-2, the final course in the -2 sequence of mathematics. This course sequence is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical thinking skills identified for entry into post-secondary programs that do not require the study of calculus.

The -2 sequence of math is a rigorous, quick-paced and advanced level of math. This course will require a lot of time and effort to be successful. It is suggested that a minimum of 45-60 minutes of time is spent studying, reviewing notes, and doing homework outside of class daily in order to be successful.

My goals for you as math students include the following:

 Become proficient at mathematical communication

 Make mathematical connections

 Become proficient in mental math and estimation

 Be able to problem solve

 Become adept at mathematical reasoning

Supplies

 binder/loose leaf paper and/or notebook

 graphing paper

 pen

 textbook

Extra Help

 pencil

 eraser

 graphing calculator

 ruler

Mrs. Sample will be available for extra help Mondays after school and Wednesdays at lunchtime. Students who require extra help outside of these hours can make alternative arrangements with Mrs. Sample.

Homework Site

Daily class notes as well as assignments, supplementary tutorial videos and other helpful resources will be posted on the course homework site regularly. Students should be checking the course homework site at least once per week.

Calculator Policy

Only graphing calculators on Alberta Learning’s approved list may be used. The TI-83+ is recommended as staff at HCC are familiar with its use and will be able to assist you with its various functions. Purchasing another type is allowed but you will have to learn to use it on your own. Keep the manual handy. Your teacher must be able to clear your calculator at any time. Password protection must be removed. Games are not allowed on any calculator that is used in the classroom. All calculators will be cleared before exams and the lids must be placed on the floor as per rules set out by Alberta Learning.

Cell Phones, iPods and Other Music Devices

Mature, responsible use of music devices in class is expected. You will be asked to put your phone away, and if the problem continues to persist you may be asked to hand in your phone during class time.
