Cooling and Warming Shelters Shelters may be opened in extreme weather conditions, such as excessive heat or cold, or long-term power outages. If an emergency occurs and you need to be sheltered, please listen to local authorities on which shelters have been opened. You can find out which shelters are open by visiting the town website at www.fairfieldct.gov or by listening to your local media. This information may also be communicated via Fairfield’s emergency notification system. The opening of a shelter is determined based on the number of people that need to be sheltered and the type and location of the emergency. Shelters maybe opened for short or long periods of time. If seeking shelter for a short term event, such as cooling, residents should bring the following items: Eyeglasses Prescription medications that will be needed during the time you are at the shelter Reading material Aids used to assist in walking (walkers, wheelchairs) Residents using a shelter for a long-term event, such as a power outage, should bring the following items: Blanket or sleeping bag Change of clothes Personal hygiene items (toothpaste, toothbrush and holder, soap, washcloth, shampoo, comb and brush, tissues, deodorant, lotion, shaving cream, razor, socks, flashlight, batteries, sweat pants, towels, crayons and coloring books for children Prescription medications Reading materials Aids used to assist in walking (walkers, wheelchairs)
