The 2012-2013 Major Project for the Kiwanis Club of New Kingston is to increase the capacity
of the Haemodialysis Service at the Diabetes Association of Jamaica (DAJ), a not-for-profit,
non-governmental agency. The Club, through its fundraising efforts and partnership with the
Jamaica National Building Society, proposes to hand over to the DAJ, at least two (2)
Haemodialysis machines and the accompanying chairs for the 60 patients battling with kidney
disease (Chronic Renal Failure) and whom require 2 to 3 treatments per week for this life
preserving treatment.
According to the DAJ, 69% of patients in need of dialysis are less than 60 years old, affecting
the productive age group. In excess of 300,000 (17.9%) persons in Jamaica, over the age of
15 years, have diabetes, and 50% are not aware of their condition. Diabetes is one of the major
leading causes of kidney disease, the second leading cause of death, it is the leading cause of
amputation, secondary blindness, heart disease and stroke, and is the most costly disease to
manage when complications occur. – Source: Diabetes Association of Jamaica.
The Type of Medical Equipment:
Haemodialysis (Nikkos)
The Approximate Cost:
US$70,000 – TWO machines and TWO accompanying chairs (cost provided by the DAJ).
The main source of funds/Machines:
1. A JNBS Global Bank Account for Jamaicans living here and abroad to give contributions.
2. Part proceeds from the 2012-2013 Kiwanis New Kingston Charity Golf Tournament @
Caymans Golf Course, Sunday, April 14, 2013.
3. Proceeds from the Club’s Annual Awards Luncheon on Saturday, May 24 th at the Jamaica Pegasus.
4. The Club’s Diaspora Committee in concert with overseas medical practitioners for support cash/kind.
Expected Outcome from the implementation of the Project:
1. More patients can be treated – a reduction of the waiting list.
2. Priority Access to children and the elderly in Institutions that are served by the Kiwanis Club
of New Kingston.
3. Helping the DAJ to keep the cost of Haemodialysis treatment affordable.
