ORRETT RHODEN INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL

OF JAMAICA

Under the distinguished patronage of Their Excellencies the Governor-

General the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen and the Most Hon. Lady Allen and His Excellency

Vladimir Polenov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Jamaica

26 November 2013, London - The only classical music festival in the English-speaking Caribbean, The

Orrett Rhoden International Music Festival aims “to bring classical music alive” in Jamaica with its annual concert series in Kingston and Westmoreland. Each year’s programmes will be presented to

Jamaicans as well as to visitors to the island in search of a tropical destination with a little extra to offer as a compliment to the traditional sand, sea and sun.

Annual festival performances will not only take place in Jamaica, but will also tour the home country of the featured composer for that year, followed by a gala concert at Carnegie Hall in New York.

This November, four concerts will be presented in Jamaica. The first will take place at UWI Chapel,

Mona, Kingston, on 24th November, followed by two lunch hour concerts at the mystical

Mountambrin Theatre Gallery in Caledonia District, Westmoreland on 26th and 27th November. The final concert on 1st December will take place at the UWI Chapel, Mona, Kingston.

Making their first special guest appearance on the 27th November and 1st December is the famed trio DEORO led by the great American cellist Dave Eggar; another of the 3 Rita Coore “distinguished proteges”, Jamaican concert pianist, Paul Shaw; as well as the celebrated musical ambassador of

Jamaica and member of Third World band, Stephen “Cat” Coore on cello and guitar.

In addition, we are proud to present, two young and exciting Jamaican artists : Soprano, Filicia

Morrison-Williams, who, without question, is Jamaica’s greatest new discovery; and songwriter/tenor, Marcel Rhoden who premiers his first classical reggae composition for voice and grand piano, accompanied by his brother – a must see and a must hear! The concerts will begin with a festival debut performance of hypnotic African drumming by The Akwaaba Drummers of

Jamaica while Orrett Rhoden will appear throughout the programme as accompanist and in extemporizations with DEORO and Stephen “Cat” Coore.

One of the primary aims of the festival is to bring both performers and audiences together in a global unifying effort, for music does unite all nations.

The concert on 1 st December will be live streamed on www.orrettrhoden.com

. Both concerts begin at 6pm EST/11pm GMT.
