Award Information Students should use this application to apply for any or all four summer funding awards. However, students will only be considered for funding for which they meet the criteria and indicate a preference on the application, and students can only accept one of the above awards. Please carefully review the background information below along with the specific eligibility requirements for each scholarship. Background Information We are pleased to offer students the chance to apply for these Summer Research Awards. Each $3,500 award is intended for students who wish to focus exclusively on research: students must commit to conducting research for at least 40 hours per work over a period of 10 weeks during Summer Term 2013. We strongly recommend that students not enroll in summer coursework (including test-prep courses, such as for MCATs or law school) while conducting their sponsored research. Preference will be given to students without such concurrent obligations. Students working with human or animal subjects may need approval of their research design from the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and should have this approval before the start of Summer Term 2013 so that their research work is not delayed. IRB approval is required for conducting interviews for research purposes, and it is important to plan ahead. All students who travel abroad will need a passport. Some countries may require a visa which is the responsibility of the student to obtain. Students who travel to international locations for research are required to purchase supplemental study abroad health insurance, which is available through the Office of International Affairs. Please contact Grace Johnson (johnson.136@osu.edu) for further information. Because extensive faculty supervision is expected, all applicants will need the collaboration of a committed faculty mentor who will also serve as the advisor for the project. All students are eligible for the URO and Holbrook Fellowships, only Honors students are eligible for Honors Scholarships, and only students majoring in the Division of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (College of Arts and Sciences) are eligible for Mayers Scholarships. Additional criteria for each scholarship are explained below. Undergraduate Research Office — URO Summer Research Fellowships — Psychology–URO Summer Research Fellowships — Economics–URO Summer Research Fellowships — EEOB–URO Summer Research Fellowships The purpose of the URO Summer Research Fellowships is to provide highly motivated students in any field of study with the opportunity to carry out an independent research project with an OSU faculty member. The award will be distributed in two parts: $3,000 will be disbursed at the start of Summer Term, and $500 will be awarded upon submission of a progress report at the end of the term. Fellowship recipients are required to present their findings (or work in progress) at the 2013 Fall Undergraduate Research Day and the 2014 Denman Undergraduate Research Forum in March. Eligibility: Applicants must be making adequate progress towards a major and be enrolled as an Ohio State student during Spring Semester and Autumn Semester, 2013. Applicants may be Honors students, but this is not a requirement. Applicants should not enroll in summer coursework (including test-prep courses), as noted above. Selection will be made in consultation with University-wide faculty and will be based upon the quality of the research proposal, the student's academic performance and promise, a recommendation from the faculty project advisor with information regarding the structure and substance of his/her plans for the applicant's summer research experience, and a second letter of recommendation (OSU faculty are preferred but not required for the second letter). Preference will be given to students who have not yet had a chance to be involved in a summer research experience, who plan to complete a thesis to graduate with distinction, and/or apply to graduate or professional school after completing their undergraduate degree. URO and Office of International Affairs — Holbrook Research Abroad Fellowship The purpose, requirements and eligibility of the Holbrook Research Abroad Fellowship are the same as for the URO Summer Research Fellowship (see above), except that the proposed research project is to be conducted in a foreign country. While students must conduct full-time research over a period of 10 weeks, time abroad may be less than 10 weeks. In countries under a current Department of State Travel Warning (http://travel.state.gov), undergraduate students cannot use scholarship awards for study abroad programs and/or individual international projects outside of venues approved by Ohio State. For further information, please contact Grace Johnson (johnson.136@osu.edu) at the Office of International Affairs. University Honors & Scholars — Summer Research Scholarships The purpose of the University Honors Summer Research Scholarships is to provide especially promising candidates for graduation “with Honors Research Distinction” the opportunity to enhance significantly the quality of their Honors Research and Thesis Projects. A report on the progress of the project is required by the first day of Autumn Semester 2013. Scholarship recipients will be required to present their findings (or work in progress) at the 2013 Fall Undergraduate Research Day and at the 2014 Denman Undergraduate Research Forum in March. Eligibility: Applicants must be members of an Honors program and be approved for candidacy for graduation “with Honors Research Distinction” during the 2013-2014 or 2014-2015 academic year. Selection will be made in consultation with University-wide faculty and will be based upon the quality of the research proposal, the student's academic performance and promise, a faculty member recommendation, and a recommendation from the faculty project advisor with information regarding the structure and substance of his/her plans for the applicant's summer research experience and thesis project. College of Arts and Sciences (Division of Natural and Mathematical Sciences) — Mayers Summer Research Scholarships The purpose of the Mayers Summer Research Scholarships is to provide especially promising students majoring in actuarial science, astronomy, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, computer & information science, evolution & ecology, earth sciences, mathematics, microbiology, molecular genetics, physics, plant cellular & molecular biology, or zoology the opportunity to significantly enhance the quality of their research and thesis projects. A report on the progress of the project is required by the first day of Autumn Semester 2013. Scholarship recipients will also be required to present their work at the 2013 Fall Undergraduate Research Day and at the NMS Undergraduate Research Forum in Spring Semester 2014.
