Dryden Senior Ryan Whitaker shot 74 and finished in third place at the prestigious Douglas Memorial Tournament at Corning Country Club Sunday. The select field boasted 72 of the state’s top high school golfers, including former and current state champions and most of the top players in section IV. Dryden junior Jonathan Becker was also invited and shot a respectable 86. Whitaker, Becker and the rest of the Dryden Purple Lions Varsity Golf team have a busy week ahead of them as they try to remain undefeated for the 2013 season. Currently 11-0 and alone in first place, Dryden will play 5 matches over the next 7 days. None is bigger than Friday’s match against defending IAC North champions, the Trumansburg Blue Raiders. Dryden was able to beat Trumansburg last week at Dryden Lake Golf Course, but since then T-burg has played extremely well and will be very tough to beat on their home course. The girls track team had an awesome meet Saturday at the Vestal Invite, breaking 2 school records and placing 2nd. Abbey Yatsko was named girls track MVP. Rachel Hutchinson’s record in the 800 breaks her own that she set last year while the 400m relay girls broke a record that stood since 1980. Dryden Senior Ryan Whitaker and Junior Jonathan Becker each shot 38 on a windy, rainy afternoon in difficult scoring conditions. Both players overcame double-bogeys early in the round with birdies towards the end. Whitaker birdied the eighth and ninth holes for the second straight match while Becker birdied eight and narrowly missed a birdie at nine that would have given him the outright medalist honors. Mike Killian shot a solid score of 40 for the Chiefs. Dryden hosts the Union Springs Purple Wolves Thursday afternoon at Dryden Lake Golf Course. The team was led by Brittany Deeley’s pitching the last 4 innings, a great job behind the plate by Amy Gardner and Brianna Stafford second long home run of the season. The modified baseball team defeated Spencer-Van Etten yesterday by a score of 16 to 5. Kyle Burvee went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles; Mark Dodici was on base 5 times, including 2 doubles and 3 walks while Jayson Wojcinski put in a 3 hit night of his own. The defense was solid, led by C.J. The Modified baseball team notched an impressive 9 to 4 victory against Union Springs, who beat Dryden earlier in the year. Jon Wimer led the hitting attack, going 3 for 3 with a run scored and Kyle Burvee slugged a 2 run double to put the game out of reach. On the hill, Mark Dodici surrendered only 1 earned run through 4 solid innings, striking out 5. Great game, men!
