Volunteering at the DBH Why do we need YOUR help? The Daniel Boone Homestead offers a wide variety of volunteer options for any skill set or interest. Training is provided to all new volunteers in their areas of interest. If you are interested in something that’s not on this list, please let us know. The Daniel Boone Homestead is owned by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) and historic operations are run by the Friends of the Daniel Boone Homestead (FDBH). This arrangement is a fairly new development. In 2009, the PHMC announced it was removing its four museum employees from the site. Rather than see the historic site close, the FDBH hired their own employees and are now responsible for the day-today historic operations of the site, managing the facility rentals, and all the site’s special events and programs. The listed volunteer job titles are meant to give you an overall idea of what you can do here at the Homestead. Do not feel that you need to do everything under the job title that you choose. Volunteers can give as much or as little time as they can manage. We ask for a minimum of once/month (with the exception of certain Historic Demonstrators who only attend one or two events a year). But we welcome you to spend more time with us! Volunteer Opportunities at the Daniel Boone Homestead Volunteers were always an important part of the Daniel Boone Homestead (DBH), but their assistance is now even more crucial as the staff has been reduced. The FDBH actually provide more special events with this smaller staff, however, our general hours of operation had to be reduced. Do you . . . The mission of the FDBH is to interpret the life of Daniel Boone; the experiences of the Maugridge and DeTurk families’; and the settlement, development, and culture of the Oley Valley in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century and to provide recreational and educational opportunities to Pennsylvania and its visitors. 400 Daniel Boone Road, Birdsboro, PA 19508 610-582-4900 Find us on Facebook & Twitter, too! This is where YOU come in! Volunteers can assist with some of the tasks staff members are currently doing, allowing staff to devote more attention to administrative tasks and developing funding for improving our special events and programs. We would also love to see our hours increased. Love history? Think animals are the cutest things? Like spending time outdoors? Enjoy talking to people? Want to help preserve our heritage?
