MOUNTED GAMES
The Mounted Games Association of Western Australia (MGAWA) is an equestrian sport that
encourages participation and enjoyment from all horse riders. The sport itself is a
combination of horsemanship and agility to perform races with varying skills at pace.
The sport has developed in WA over the past 7 years. The sport gained traction immediately
through its close resemblance to the pony club Prince Philip Games competition. Currently
we hold monthly events that attract around 60 riders per competition. On three separate
weekends a year MGAWA hold the individual, pairs and teams State Championship. On a
national level there are also annual championships for each combination of the MGA sport.
The Mounted Games Association is the governing body of a world sport that has existed for
over 32 years. The sport ties up what was once many separate variations of novelties and
sporting events and developed a body and rules to build and grow this discipline globally.
Each year Australia sends a team to the World Championships where Australians borrow
horses to compete. In 2008 the World Championships were in Australia and every country
except Australia borrowed horses at that event.
Mounted games it is a great sport to test the horse and rider's ability to act as one in
coordinating tasks at speed. Mounted Games is also a great sport for young riders to develop
confidence in their riding through different skill sets that are needed.
This year MGAWA's event at the Wagin Woolorama is aimed at encouraging as many riders as
possible who are looking for a different sport to try or are already keen novelty riders, camp
drafters or polo cross riders and are keen to test their skills in this event. The great thing
about the competition at Wagin Woolorama in 2015 is that the event will be run over
Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will be run as a pairs competition so if you know someone
who you will enjoy riding with then enter together. On Sunday we are running a Teams
Competition. Teams can have 4 or 5 riders. If you don’t have a partner for Saturday or a
team for Sunday, still enter and the organisers will do their best to pair you up and find a
team for you to ride with. All levels of riders are encouraged to enter from leadline riders
right through to the more mature.
