Oak Ridge National Laboratory Internship Internship Information Internship Information Funded by a Robert Noyce grant from the National Science Foundation, this internship aims to engage STEM students in educationally purposeful activities that allow them the opportunity to examine their interest in and disposition for teaching science or mathematics in middle or high schools. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is located in Oak Ridge, TN and is the U.S. Department of Energy’s largest science and energy laboratory. ONRL is managed by the University of Tennessee and Battelle Memorial Institute and is located about 7 miles from the town of Oak Ridge and about 25 miles from Knoxville, TN, home of the University of Tennessee. Two UTeaChattanooga freshmen or sophomores will be jointly selected (see selection processes) by the UNSP PI and Co-PI, National Laboratory researchers, mentors and education personnel to serve as National Laboratory Summer Interns (NLSIs). NLSIs will work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratory’s research programs. The NLSIs will be enrolled in the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program during their entire time at ORNL. The SULI encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 17 DOE National Laboratories. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects related to ongoing programs. Travel Noyce will provide a travel stipend. Housing If the intern must travel more than 50 miles, Noyce will provide each intern a housing allowance of $125 per week for a total of 10 weeks. Payment Interns will receive an additional stipend of $425.00 per week. Duration Participants should expect to spend at least 40 hours per week (for 10 weeks) and at least 8 hours per day in activities and/or research related to their internships. Assignments Each intern is expected to complete the full ten week program; complete entrance and exit surveys; submit a complete copy of a research paper or presentation (depending on the individual laboratory’s policy); submit an Education Module; submit an abstract of their research in the required format; and attend all scheduled events including lectures, tours and group activities.
