The great outdoors
If you like the great outdoors, this area has some of the most dramatic landscapes in Europe. Cruise

steam train that will take you across moorland that becomes a purple carpet of heather in late
summer.
Hands on History
Legions of castles and ancient fortifications, saintly shrines and world heritage sites evoke the
history of the North as a place of power, pilgrimage and conflict and offer hands on experience of
what is was like to live in the North a century or a millennia ago. Spectacular stately homes and
gardens tell the stories of England’s nobility and industrial magnates who shaped the landscapes and
lives of local people through their patronage and their wealth.
City culture
A warm welcome waits for you in the cities of the North where museums and galleries, shopping and
eating out can be enjoyed in some of the most exciting and surprising city locations. Stroll along
quaysides that are buzzing with people enjoying a relaxed meal of locally sourced produce and
favourite local dishes that are rooted in the heritage of the area. Take in a performance of live
music, from jazz to folk, Beatles to rock before heading for the clubs and pubs that complete a
famous Northern night out.
Events
If you want to plan your trip around an event there you are spoilt for choice: historic cityscapes are
lit up on darker autumn nights by son et lumiere displays that transform them into an artistic
canvass; arts festivals showcase home grown and international performers in venues ancient and
modern while the sporting credentials of the North are on show at events with international appeal.
Getting to and getting around
Northern England is a small and compact area where you can combine city, countryside and coast in
a day but to get the most out of a trip a minimum of 3 days is recommended. It is easy to get to the
North via two international airports in Manchester and Newcastle and regional airports in Liverpool,
Leeds, Doncaster and Durham. Direct flights take just over an hour from Amsterdam. Ferry routes
provide a relaxed overnight cruise from Zeebrugge and Rotterdam to Hull or Amsterdam to
Newcastle. Come with your car and take your time to travel on roads that are picturesque and easy
to navigate. If you are arriving via London the area is just a couple of hours by intercity train.

Northern England is being promoted at Vakantiebeurs through The £10m Government funded
Northern Tourism Growth programme. VisitEngland is leading the delivery of the programme
working closely with VisitBritain and partner destinations from across the North to put its
tourism assets firmly on the international map. The programme aims to grow leisure and business
visitors to the region and deliver an additional 2m visitor nights to the North of England equating to
£177m in international visitor spend and facilitate the creation of 3,280 jobs.
