Believe, Achieve, Succeed. In our hands we hold the future. Policy for Transition Rationale At Hutton CE Primary we believe a partnership between all the stakeholders and practitioners’ working together has the most positive impact upon a child’s development and learning. We seek to develop an effective partnership with pupils, parents and pre-schools and Secondary schools through open discussion and liaison, regular communication and opportunities to become involved in the children’s life at school. Aims To: Ensure that Hutton CE Primary School consults with all partners to make the transition process from pre-school to school, year to year and year 6 to secondary school, as smooth as possible To make the transition process simple and workable To ensure all pupils are happy with the transition process Guidelines We liaise with different stakeholders in different ways. Pre school settings Most of our pupils have experienced some time at a preschool setting prior to starting school. Children come from a variety of settings. Our liaison with settings comprises of: Invitation for oldest preschool pupils to watch our Nativity (December) Foundation teacher visits preschool setting Pupils visit school library weekly. Use of school field for Forest skills and sports day. Our liaison with all preschool settings comprises of: Parent meeting for preschool parents (May) Pre school pupils attend “play afternoons” (June – July) Home visit from Foundation teacher and LSA (September) Within School All pupils have a transition period as they move from one class to another. Therefore we try to make the transition between classes as smooth as possible. The pupils moving from Reception to Y1, from Y1 to Y2 and from Y2 to Y3 (into KS2) have more transition time than older pupils. Each class is split into three groups and they each go on a visit to their new class. There they join 2/3 of the current year group, who show them around the class and make them welcome. Transition Policy –June 2015 1 Believe, Achieve, Succeed. In our hands we hold the future. After these small group visits in June, the whole class visit together on “Swap Days” at the beginning of July. These visits are when the whole school move to their new Classrooms, meet their new teachers, experience playtime (especially relevant to Y2 to Y3 transition.) We always try to ensure these visits are late enough in July to be after any new appointments, to enable the pupils to meet their new teacher. Support staff work across year groups to ensure that there is always a familiar adult with the group. Any children with particular needs or anxieties are taken with the Learning Mentor for additional visits. Secondary Schools Our pupils go to a range of secondary schools; most are split between Broadoak and Churchill, although some also go to Hans Price, Priory, Worle and out of area to Bristol or Sidcot. Our liaison with Churchill comprises of: Meeting with SENDCO for SEND transition needs (September before transfer) Meeting with pupils and head of Y7 in the summer term. Meeting for parents at Churchill secondary school One day transfer of Y6 pupils to secondary school to experience the timetable Any children with particular needs or anxieties are taken with the Learning Mentor for additional visits. One day drama performance at the secondary school Our liaison with Broadoak comprises of: Y5 DT project Meeting with pupils and head of Y7 in the summer term. Additional meeting with SENDCO (if required for any individuals) Meeting for parents at Broadoak secondary school One day transfer of Y6 pupils to secondary school to experience the timetable. Any children with particular needs or anxieties are taken with the Learning Mentor for additional visits. Parents For parents of preschool pupils we arrange an early visit to school for an initial meeting to meet and reassure parents, and to explain the staggered entry system. We then encourage them to attend events to get to know the school and parents at the school. Parent meeting for preschool parents Pre school pupils attend “play afternoons” (June – July) Home visit from Foundation teacher and LSA (September) Transition Policy –June 2015 2 Believe, Achieve, Succeed. In our hands we hold the future. PTFA social evening (September) For parents of pupils transferring to secondary school The secondary school holds a welcome meeting for parents Curriculum All pupils in school go through a transition process every year, although obviously some year groups face greater changes than others. As recognition of the fact that change can be a daunting prospect for some pupils, the whole school works through a Personal, social, health education (PSHME) programme in the summer term focussed on “change”. The following September the pupils start back to school and focus on “new beginnings.” At the end of year 6 children are invited to attend leaver’s day at Wells Cathedral. Monitoring and Evaluation This policy will be monitored to check effectiveness by the senior leadership team. It will be reviewed annually by staff and the Governors Curriculum and Standards Committee. Conclusion Hutton CE Primary School works hard through discussion, liaison, and regular communication to make the links between Hutton CE Primary School and other establishments as smooth as possible for all its pupils.
