The incidence of Demodex infestation in patients with blepharitis increases with age, with some reports suggesting an occurrence in 84 % of sufferers at age 60 and in 100 % at age 70+. Compounding the problem, ocular inflammation caused by this parasite has not been well recognised by ocular health professionals. As a result, this potential cause is often overlooked in the differential diagnosis of corneal and external diseases, leading to substandard treatment regimes. This project would explore the role of Demodex in blepharitis, particularly investigating their role in the aging population. In addition to evaluating Demodex pathological role in blepharitis, we would also investigate novel treatment regimes with the involvement of industry partners. Supervisory Team Dr E.
