2014 Summer Employment Salmon-Challis National Forest Range Technicians The Salmon Challis National Forest in Salmon, Challis, Mackay, & Leadore, ID is seeking highly-motivated individuals to join our seasonal range monitoring team! Position Description: Assist Rangeland Management Specialists/Wildlife Biologist with: o o o o Riparian and upland monitoring Plant identification in upland and riparian habitats Daily allotment inspections for range condition and livestock location Data collection, analysis and reporting This position involves: o o o o Daily use of horses, 4WD vehicles and hiking in remote areas Navigation with maps and GPS Interaction with ranchers, special interest groups and wildlife agencies Monitoring interactions between livestock grazing and endangered/sensitive species (bighorn sheep, steelhead, salmon, sage grouse, etc.) This position requires: o o o o o o A basic understanding of rangeland ecology and livestock management. Ability to spend 10-hour days traveling by horse, foot or truck/ATV in steep terrain and all weather conditions. Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel and data dictionaries Ability to work well with others or independently. Personal initiative to work safely and efficiently. A great attitude and a good sense of humor! Details: Season: May/June through September/October (dates are flexible). Work Schedule: Typically consists of 4 ten-hour days or 5 eight-hour days, Monday through Saturday. Pay & GS Level: Pay is based on GS level. GS level is based on experience and/or education (GS3: $12.07/hour GS4: $13.55/hour or GS-5: $15.15/hour) Housing: Limited government housing may be available in all locations on a first-come, first-served basis. Government housing is approximately $250/month. Local rentals average $450/month.
