Fellow Membership may be granted to any individual (hereinafter, a “Fellow member”) who, according to the Society’s Fellows Committee, has demonstrated outstanding personal achievement in the field of tribology or lubrication engineering, has been engaged in active practice in a science and/or engineering profession for a minimum of twenty (20) years, and has been a Member for a minimum of ten (10) years. THE MEMBER BEING PROPOSED IS: Name Position Company Address City State/Province Zip/Postal Code Country Member in good standing Years Membership # GUIDELINES FOR NOMINATION PROPOSAL FELLOW MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA AND PROCEDURES Any current STLE Member may propose any other STLE Member for Fellow Membership by submitting a completed Proposal for Fellow form to the Society (herein referred as "Presenter"). The Presenter is responsible for completing the Proposal form, as well as securing five letters of support for the candidate from STLE Members (herein referred as "Sponsors"), at least two of which must be STLE Fellows. STLE Members may propose themselves for Fellow Membership. A Fellows Committee Member may not be a Presenter or a Sponsor. Key Timelines September 30 December 31 January May Completed proposal must be submitted to STLE Headquarters. Fellows Committee completes review and recommendations. Recommendations are presented to the Board of Directors Fellow Membership is awarded at Annual Meeting Fellows Committee members will evaluate each Proposal individually to determine if the candidate meets the standard for outstanding personal achievement through significant contributions in management, education, research or technological areas in the tribology field. Failure to qualify does not preclude submission of a new Proposal in future years. INTERPRETATION OF QUALIFICATIONS FOR FELLOW MEMBERSIP The Fellows committee shall evaluate each Proposal to determine whether the proposed candidate: (1) has met the practice and membership requirements set forth in the STLE Constitution and Bylaws; (2) has had five (5) sponsorship letters submitted on his or her behalf; and (3) has made outstanding and recognized contributions to the sciences or engineering in the field of tribology and lubrication engineering. The candidate's accomplishments must be beyond those typically expected of a scientist or engineer in tribology and lubrication engineering. The candidate should be recognized as an outstanding authority as shown by one or more of the following: o his/her being responsible for significant and widely known improvements in the field o relevant publications including any or all of the following; books, papers, patents, articles, presentations. o exceptional professional distinction in the candidates area of influence PRESENTER & SPONSOR GUIDELINES Sponsors should be as widely distributed as possible. Preferably not more than two should be submitted from any one organization or community. If this is impractical, the Presenter should provide the Fellows Committee with an explanation regarding his or her selection of Sponsors. As indicated above, elevation to Fellow is limited to those individuals that have demonstrated outstanding personal achievement well above those normally expected. Therefore, it is very important that the Presenter and Sponsors provide specific details that clearly identify these significant accomplishments. The sponsor letter should not be regarded as an endorsement but rather a verification of the outstanding personal achievements the proposed candidate has accomplished. Attached to the end of this form is an example of one style of sponsor letter and the suggested structure. SUMMARY OF PRESENTER AND SPONSORS Sponsors: Five STLE Fellows or Members are required to serve as sponsors of a Fellow Proposal. Each sponsor must submit a letter which clearly identifies the candidate's "Outstanding Personal Achievement in the Field of Lubrication". Proposal for Fellow Sponsor Letter – Suggested Structure: It is highly recommended that your support letter contain all or most of the elements outlined below. This is not a letter of endorsement but rather a verification of the outstanding personal achievements the proposed candidate has accomplished. Elements Content a Introduction containing the objective of the letter and your relationship to the proposed candidate. b Review the candidate’s membership and activity within the STLE c Outline the candidate’s history in Industry/Academia focussing on the activities which have promoted the aims of the STLE and which have furthered tribological knowledge both from a fundamental/applied R&D and from an applications perspective. d Discuss recognition of the candidate by such bodies as the industry, academia, professional organizations, technical societies, etc. e List the candidate’s activity in other professional organizations and or technical societies. f Discuss the candidate’s publications – these would include refereed papers, non-refereed papers, patents, articles, presentations and books. This may include a reference to the candidates CV if the list is significant. g Mention the candidate’s interpersonal skills – include such characteristics as teaching, mentoring, tutoring, etc., h Summary: summarize the above and reconfirm your support for the elevation of the candidate to the status of STLE Fellow
