Buddy the Backpack Mascot Guidelines First Things First: You have been selected to play Buddy the Backpack, congratulations! This is a big responsibility and should not be taken lightly. Buddy joined The Food Bank team in 2014 and has become a popular public figure. There are a few things to consider when you first take on the role. Preparation: If you have access to the costume prior to the event, try it on and practice. Make sure you know how all the pieces are worn and the proper way to put them on. Maintenance: Check the mascot suit over for wear and tear before and after each use. Note all the problem areas before signing the costume back over and show the person checking the costume back in. Safety: You must have a “handler” AT ALL TIMES. Determine non-verbal signals with your escort to notify them you are fine, need a break, need your gloves/costume adjusted and any other concerns that might arise. An actor should NEVER wear the costume for more than 30-45 minutes without taking a break. Adjust that time based on whether you are indoors/outdoors, activity level and length of the program. YOU ARE THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY so take care of yourself. Always have water available. ALWAYS travel with your handler. Mascot 101: Putting on the costume One of the most important parts of playing Buddy is to keep the mystery alive. Always prearrange a changing station for use. This should be a distance from the main appearance arena and well hidden to ensure proper privacy. When putting on the costume follow this set of rules: Be hygienic (you are not the only wearer) Wear a breathable/lycra shirt, pair of comfortable shorts or compression shorts and socks First put on the pants with the elastic stirrup under foot and suspenders over shoulders Put the signature Buddy socks (they look like leg warmers) on over the pants Put the signature Buddy shoes on over the socks Have your handler help lift the Buddy body suit to put it on Once positioned comfortably then have the handler slide the Buddy gloves on (two fingers in the middle, one each end and your thumb) and pull them tight Once in the suit be sure to have a clear path to where you need to go. The handler is responsible to make sure that you don’t hit anything along the way. ONLY take stairs if you have a large enough space for your entire foot to fit on the step. REMEMBER once in the costume there will be no ability to sit down so prepare to be on your feet the whole time the costume is on. The costume’s approximate weight is 35 pounds so be sure the actor can carry the suit comfortably. Appearances: Buddy may be asked to appear at a gala, kids helping kids or even a parade. It is important to know the entire expected result of your appearance prior to the event. Parades – Try and ride through the parade if possible. If you are walking be sure to have an exit along the route with help to transport you and away from the crowd. Be properly hydrated! Indoor Event/Gala – Be sure to have your handler right by your side to help you steer through the crowd. NEVER speak inside the costume; the handler should have speaking points prepared. When doing photos make sure to have space for entire group to take the picture quickly. 3rd Party Events – Make sure the handler has already set a schedule for the appearance. There should be ample changing space and someone to act as a contact on behalf of the event. Limit the available time to the public and have the vendor plan accordingly. Outdoor Events – Hydration is priority number one. Make sure you and your handler have worked out a non-verbal hand system to make sure needs are met. ONLY STAY IN THE SUIT during allowed time constraints. Never stay in the costume longer than 45 minutes. Remember that not only are you representing a fun character but also The Food Bank. Always act appropriately and politely. Allow your handler to help children interact with you and keep a safe flow of visitors. Once the event is over, carefully remove the costume and take inventory to ensure that ALL the pieces are packed properly. Look for any damage or needs for the suit and lay the pieces out at The Food Bank so the suit can air out. And remember to have fun Organization/Group _______________________ Actor ____________________ Handler ____________________
