array of drums and hand-held percussion instruments for you to use. Conceived as a fun and lowpressure class, sessions will focus on group drumming, rhythmic organization, playing
techniques, and musical expression. Designed for a range of abilities, previous experience with
percussion or music reading is welcome but not required nor necessary. Music is taught within an
oral tradition that utilizes direct demonstration and visual/aural cues, calling upon the student to

Musical selections change every session, and beginning to advanced students are welcome as
there are parts for everyone!
Students will have the option to perform Brazilian street music in the ISU Homecoming Parade on
Saturday Oct. 17th. Family members, local music teachers and friends of any age can join in with

knowledge in each discipline are essential for student success, and it is believed that students
learn most effectively when these areas are taught in an interdisciplinary and applied approach.
S.T.E.A.M. education incorporates the “A” for the arts – recognizing that to be successful in
technical fields, individuals must also be creative and use critical thinking skills which are best
developed through exposure to the arts. In this class, students will learn and build upon existing
drawing, painting, and sculpting skills while integrating science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics (S.T.E.M.) concepts. While creating art, students will be engaged in areas of
S.T.E.M including geometry, calculation, color science, and architecture. Students will be given a

The THCC offers three different choirs to accommodate the singing experience of every child.
Children may progress to the more advanced choirs through bi-annual auditions. “Sing Up!” (ages
7 & up) is a choir intended for younger children who have little formal training or performance
experience. This is a preparatory choir experience geared toward the child who is still learning to
listen and match the pitch, develop his/her vocal range and sing with a pure tone. With the help of
ISU choral education majors, the “Sing Up!” group participates in games, sings songs and
engages in vocal exercises. “Lyric Choir” (ages 9 & up) is an intermediate choir. In this choir,
singers learn basic vocal production, singing in-tune, how to follow along in their music, and how
to blend with other singers to achieve a beautiful unison sound. In “Treble Choir” (ages 9 & up),
singers build on vocal technique and blending. They learn to harmonize through the use of two
and three part music. Greater sight-singing skills are utilized.
THE TERRE HAUTE GUITAR CLUB
The Community School of the Arts’ Terre Haute Guitar Club offers unique learning experiences
for adults, teens and children ages 6 and up. Our teachers - extraordinary guitarists and players
themselves - lead this program using a fun, multi-layered and accessible approach to learning
guitar through guitar classes and lessons.
Guitar Club students are placed in age-appropriate labs that meet throughout the week. As
students progress through the program, they learn to develop technical skills on the guitar while
learning to understand and properly apply musical concepts. Students are given the opportunity
to learn songs, all while building a connection with rhythmic, melodic and harmonic ideas. As
students gain more confidence in and dedication to their practice, they are able to take one-onone lessons with one of our trained instructors.
All Guitar Club students are given opportunities to perform with their peers during various recitals
and community public performances.
The Terre Haute Guitar Club is for beginning to intermediate levels, offering an opportunity for
students to learn to play the guitar and create music while working with a group of peers. During
this 75-minute class, students will work on guitar techniques and musical concepts through
engaging games and activities. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a final recital
near the end of the semester. Guitars will be supplied to students in-class only. Students must

Have you been looking for a fun way to supplement your child’s education while adding art and
music? We invite you to join us this fall! Class will focus on presenting the capital alphabet in
such a way that students can learn through play as well as physical and sensory experiences.
Handwriting Without Tears is a fun way for your pre-writers and emerging writers to enjoy
beginning literacy efforts. This course is multisensory (music, play dough, wooden pieces, slate
boards, and stamps) and includes a kinesthetic component. Fine motor skills are often very
difficult for kids with physical disabilities and kids on the spectrum, so we are prepared to adapt
the lessons to your specific needs so that they can learn through play as well as physical and
sensory experiences. Caregivers are encouraged to attend.
This program is a collaboration between Indiana State University’s Community School of the Arts
and Occupational Therapy program, and; the Saint Mary of-the-Woods College Music Therapy
program. Supervised by Prof. Margaret Ladyman and Prof. Sharon Boyle, music, art and
occupational therapy student instructors lead the class to teach and adapt the curriculum for your
child’s needs. This project is made possible by the assistance of McCarthy Endowment, Indiana
State University Foundation.
