HISTORY 1301-001 WINTER 2016 TITLE: HISTORICAL ENCOUNTERS LECTURER: Dr. John Sandlos FORMAT: Lectures, workshops, and discussions DESCRIPTION: History 1301 introduces students to reading and writing skills required for success in university, including the analysis of scholarly literature and primary sources. Significant class time will be spent on instruction in these skills. Students will practice analytical reading and writing through class discussion and assignments related to the theme of historical encounters. This version of the course will focus on human encounters with the environment, covering topics and debates such as pre-contact North America, the wilderness idea, Rachel Carson’s legacy, and writing to the future.
