Char-Lan now has a lacrosse team! Through
coaching from Bill Roundpoint, and the initiative of
Aodin MacDonell and Tyler Akins, the team has
formed and played in their
first tournament ever.
Although the first game
certainly demonstrated the
boys were mostly new at the
game, they won the last
game of the day. Their love
for lacrosse has been sparked
and they will be playing future games in a
tournament in Peterborough on May 14th.
After School Club
Char-Lan’s After School Club is now open in the
Library Learning Commons. The After School Club
will be open to all grades. The After School Club
will operate in the mornings on Mondays,
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from
8:30-9:10 am. The club will be open after school
on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and
Thursdays from 3:30-4:10 pm. The space is
available for those students who would like to
complete their work in a quiet environment or for
those students who need some assistance or
supervision in order to complete their work. This is
a great opportunity to catch up on homework or to
receive some extra help. Staff are on hand and
eager to assist students.
Link Crew
Crusaders in Grade 10-11 interested in Link Crew
(IDC4U) are encouraged to see Mr. Blois or
Guidance for information about applications for the
2015-16 school year. Students who signed up for
IDC4U at course selection are reminded that there
is a mandatory application and selection process to
complete, and that applications:
a) should be completed online (check your
school email) or
b) can be picked up in Guidance and are
due to Guidance by May 11th.
Look ahead, students wanting to enroll in
Link Crew must be available for Link Crew

St. Lawrence College Connections
St. Lawrence College is opening its doors to
students in Grade 7 & 8 for a one-day “hands on”
enrichment program called St. Lawrence College
Connections”. Students will have the opportunity to
participate for a day in programs taught by St.
Lawrence College teachers. It is our hope that this
experience will open students’ eyes to the
opportunities available, help them envision a future
career pathway, and encourage them to proceed to
and complete their secondary and post-secondary
education. Char-Lan will be sending selected
students on Wednesday, May 6th.
TRACK AND FIELD
A small contingent of our Track and Field athletes
went to Kingston for the first meet of the year. In
the 100m sprints Stephanie Leask placed 4th from
a field of 30 runners. In pole vault action Brennan
Seguin placed first in the junior boys division and
Emma Pasco, Mackayla Petrie and Chelsea Cayer
placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the junior girls division.
In senior pole vault Mackenna Mulhearn placed 3rd.
Our next competitions will be on May 2nd in
Brockville and May 7th in Ottawa in preparation for
the S. D. & G meet in Cornwall on May 13th.
POWER OF TALENT
Paisley Robertson, a grade nine Char-Lan student,
had an idea. Imagine if our school showcased the
‘power of talent’ to raise money for a cause that is
close to her heart – Cornwall Hospice. This is the
second year for this fundraiser. This year we are
joining forces with Glengarry District High School.
The Cornwall Hospice provides patient care for the
terminally ill. Paisley’s has first-hand experience
with this facility as her mother spent the last three
months of her life in Hospice care. This experience
inspired Paisley to give back – to initiate a
fundraiser. The idea has grown wings – staff and
students are behind her. “The Power of Talent” is
designed to raise money and awareness for the
Cornwall Hospice. The event is scheduled for
Tuesday, June 9th at 6:30 pm in the Glengarry
District High School cafeteria. The event will
feature talented staff and students from Char-Lan,
Glengarry and area. The event will also feature a
silent auction made available to us from several
generous community donors. Scotiabank has
offered to match any funds raised by our schools to
a maximum of $5000. “To make this event
possible, we are hoping to count on you to come
out to the school and to show your support” states
Robertson. It will be a fabulous evening with
amazing talent and with a worthwhile cause. We
cannot wait to see you there!! Paisley is a grade
nine student leader in a grade seven to twelve
school.
TENNIS
The Char-Lan Tennis Team will resume play at
Regionals on Wednesday, May 6th. We will travel to
Alexandria to face competition and complete the
matches that were put off due to rain back in
October 2014. Students are encouraged to start
preparing, and attend brief meetings to organize for
practices, and the event.
We are looking forward to EOSSAA
on May 19th!
St. Lawrence College Sampler Day
St. Lawrence College, in partnership with the Upper
Canada DSB and the Catholic DSB of Eastern
Ontario, is organizing a 1-day enrichment
opportunity for secondary students in Grade 10 and
11 called St. Lawrence College Grade 10/11
Sampler Day.
The program,
supported
through the
Ministry of
Education’s
School College
Work initiative
has been
developed by the
PASS, Partnering
to Articulate for
Student Success, a regional planning team made up
of Eastern Ontario’s 3 colleges and 9 local school
boards. Char-Lan will be sending 9 students on
Wednesday, May 20th.
CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH
WEEK
May 3rd to May 9th is Children’s Mental Health Week.
Parents and professionals in the community are
invited to a Meet & Greet at Char-Lan District High
School from 3pm to 6pm on Thursday, May 7th.
This would be an opportunity to meet staff
members from the Children’s Mental Health
Programs-Cornwall Community Hospital and ask
about our services that are available to children,
youth and their families in SD&G as well as any
questions/concerns about your child’s mental
health.
Here are some mental health tips:
- Make time for yourself because you
deserve it
- Talk to people you trust when you’re
feeling down, you are not alone
- Practice positive self-talk, don’t be so hard
on yourself
- Help others, it will make you feel good too
- Laughter nourishes the soul
- Good friends are good for your health
- Instead of giving myself reasons why I
can’t, give myself reasons why I can
- Don’t let what you can do stop you from
doing what you can do

Protect Yourself and Your Family from Rabies
The arrival of warmer weather means you can
spend more time outdoors with your children. It
also means you have to take some precautions to
avoid rabies, a deadly disease that can be passed
on to humans through contact with mammals and
bats. People usually become infected through
animal bites or if the animal’s saliva comes into
contact with a person’s eyes, mouth or open
wound.
As it’s estimated that the risk of children being
infected by rabies if four times greater than adults,
make sure your children and pets avoid all contact
with bats and wild animals when outdoors. If you
come across an injured wild animal, call animal
control and let them handle the situation from
there.
Here are some more tips to prevent rabies:
 Make sure your pet’s rabies vaccine is upto-date
 Teach your children not to touch wild
animals or pets they don’t know
 Supervise your pets when outdoors
 Have your pets spayed or neutered
 Report all animal bites to the EOHU
DRESS CODE
As the weather warms up, this is a reminder of the
Crusader dress code. The proper dress by students
adds to the good moral tone of the school.
 Shorts and skirts must extend sufficiently
down the thigh
 Clothing that exposes midriff, underwear,
bra straps, cleavage or a student’s bare
back is not to be worn
 Backpacks are not permitted in classrooms
