Proposed Changes to PA Test Method No. 431 (Last revised April 2005) TRAFFIC ENGINEERING AND OPERATIONS DIVISION Method of Test for PAVEMENT MARKING SAMPLING OF LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE LINES, LEGENDS, AND SYMBOLS FOR RETROREFLECTOMETER TESTING Proposed Change #1: Add a paragraph under 2. EQUIPMENT: 2.2.3 Perform testing in dry conditions on clean , smooth* surfaces and free from snow plowing activity . (*test results are significantly compromised on milled, tined and/or other coarse surfaces, i.e. Oil & Chip) Proposed Change #2: Revise sampling criteria in chart under paragraph 4.1: Current Requirements: Zone of Measurement All Legends and Symbols All Transverse Lines Length of Checkpoint Area Number of Test Point Measurements within Checkpoint Area 3 test point Each letter and measurements on symbol is a each letter and checkpoint symbol, in the area direction of travel Each transverse line is a checkpoint area 6 test point measurements on each transverse line, in the direction of travel Acceptance Criteria Calculate the average of all test points from Each legend, symbol or transverse line. If the average falls below the specified retroreflectivity requirements, the marking is unacceptable. Proposed Requirements: Zone of Measurement Length of Checkpoint Area Number of Test Point Measurements within Checkpoint Area 3 test point Each legend measurements on All Legends and and one letter of each Symbols symbol is a legend, and on each checkpoint area symbol, in the direction of travel 3 test point Transverse Each measurements on Lines: transverse line each checkpoint 24” stop lines, 6” is a checkpoint area, in the crosswalk lines area direction (or opposite direction) the line was placed. 3 test point Transverse One in ten measurements on Markings: (10%) each checkpoint Median, Gore markings is a area, in the & Yield lines checkpoint area direction (or opposite direction) the line was placed. Acceptance Criteria Calculate the average of all test points from each legends, symbols or transverse lines and markings. If the average falls below the specified retroreflectivity requirements, the marking is unacceptable.
