Due to expanding demand for research and diagnostic genomics testing, Bristol Genetics Laboratory (BGL) is
pleased to announce the addition of a number of posts to our senior leadership, operational management and
specialist scientific teams.
With a scientific and technical staff of over 90, BGL is housed in the state of the art Pathology Sciences
development in North Bristol NHS Trust and is a key member of the Severn Pathology integrated pathology
service. Integral to the Severn Pathology vision is a fully provisioned molecular hub supporting wider pathology
testing in partnership with PHE.
BGL is a fully integrated Genomics Laboratory with staff teams structured along patient care pathways to provide
comprehensive Constitutional and Oncology genomic testing to the South West with extensive specialist services
attracting a large number of national and international referrals. Our expanding NGS portfolio includes specialist
neuromuscular, renal, skeletal, cardiac, breakage, and exome studies and is supported by a dedicated
bioinformatics team. We are a key player in the delivery of the England FH cascade testing programme working
with a number of large clinical centres nationally using PASS. BGL is the Molecular MRD trial co-ordinator for
UKALL2011, and national MRD provider for Interfant and IntReALL. BGL has a significant R&D programme to
support the genomics developments in rare disease and cancer and also benefits from co-location with the
University of Bristol Learning and Research Centre in the Trust Science Quarter. BGL has a close working
relationship with the Bristol and Exeter Clinical Genetics services, as well as other clinical, academic and industry
partners.
BGL is committed to the provision of high quality training at all levels, through Modernising Scientific Careers
programmes ( STP, PTP and HSST and developing CF2-4 roles), contribution to training of other healthcare
professional and academic posts including MSc and PhD, and the dissemination of Genomics expertise to
colleagues in mainstream medicine.
We are seeking:
Clinical Scientist Band 8B – Member of senior leadership team contributing to strategic direction. Will lead the
rare disease genomics team and work closely with the Consultant Scientist for constitutional genomics and the
reproductive medicine, screening and developmental genomics team lead to deliver and expand the work
portfolio including exome sequencing. Possession of FRCPath part 2 is essential (candidates actively
preparing for part 2 are encouraged to apply).
Clinical Scientist Band 8A – key member of operational management team responsible for day to day delivery
of a defined area of work. Possession of FRCPath (minimum part 1 FRCPath) is essential (candidates actively
working towards part 1 are encouraged to apply).
For both band 8 posts, good communication, team working and supervisory skills are essential, as is
considerable experience in a diagnostic genetics laboratory, experience of new technologies, and a record of
continuing professional development.
HCPC Registered Clinical Scientist (Agenda for Change band 7)
The successful candidates will work with other members of the scientific and technical teams to deliver a high
quality laboratory diagnostic service.
Applicants should demonstrate: completion of the MSC STP training scheme including MSc, or a postgraduate
certificate of competence in molecular genetics or cytogenetics; strong scientific ability and skills; a strong record
in service development and in delivering diagnostic services; specialist experience and knowledge of UKGTN
and international genetics laboratories/services; and evidence of CPD and ongoing training in laboratory
genetics. The post holder is expected to lead one or more areas of service. This post will involve integrated
working within and across the teams of the department.
Successful applicants for any of these posts must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council
(HCPC) as a clinical scientist (cytogenetics/molecular genetics) and have an upper second or first class honours
degree and/or PhD in a relevant scientific subject. Candidates not yet registered with HCPC may be considered
for appointment at band 6.
The successful candidates will be expected to work 37.5 hours per week full-time, including participation in out of
hours working.
