Dear Parent, Throughout the summer, your child is required to read six books. Summer reading is a wonderful way to stay entertained, on target, and increase fluency and reading skills. It is required that all students adhere to the requirements listed below. Students entering third grade this September are required to read Summer According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney. Students should complete the accompanying packet of questions while they read. Students should also read two other fiction books of their choosing. A list of recommended books can be found on the following page. For each of these books students should complete a fiction book report that can be found attached to this letter. Students must also read one biography and two informational texts. It is recommended that students use a book from the Who was? series as their biography. A few examples are found on the recommendation list. For the informational texts, students should pick a topic that interests them and read a non-fiction, factual book about it. It could be the history of a sport, caring for an animal, or a book about dinosaurs; just to name a few suggestions. I have included a list of suggested topics from the 2014-2015 3rd grade class, it can be found with the other recommendations. You can find book report forms for these three books attached to this letter. To go along with the reading requirement, this summer students are also being asked to do some math work in order for them to retain the information they learned during second grade. The math packet goes over different things they learned during 2nd grade and things they should be able to do upon entering 3rd grade. If you have any questions about what your child needs to do this summer, please email me. I will get back to you as soon as I am able. My email is mconway@hnomschool.org. All summer work is due on September 8, 2015. See you in September!
