2015-2016 Junior High Music Power Public Schools Teacher’s Note I hope you’re ready for an exciting year of music. I know I certainly am. Please read the following pages which include information about grading, lettering, expectations, and your concert schedule. Mrs. Lisa Sundquist, director Expectations Pride Organization Work Together Encourage Effort Respect and Responsibility All Power students follow the POWER expectations Instrumental Rental The school is fortunate to have many instruments available to rent for $30/year. Students are not responsible for general maintenance of the instruments other than swabbing or cleaning after use. If an instrument is carelessly broken while it is in the student’s care, it is that student’s responsibility to have it repaired. Other repairs will be handled through the school. Supplies Woodwinds: 3 good reeds, cork grease (if applicable), proper cleaning equipment such as a swab or cleaning rod. Brass: valve oil, clean soft cloth Percussion: two sets of personal snare sticks Most supplies are available through the music office at a reduced price. *ALL personal items need to be marked with the student’s name. Performances Performances are mandatory and your grades reflect this. In the case of an emergency contact Mrs. Sundquist so other arrangements can be made. See the attached calendar for specific dates. Concert Attire Standard concert attire is a white shirt with black long pants or skirts, with black closed-toe shoes and hosiery. Accessories should be simple so all the students still look uniform. Appropriate attire contributes to each student’s concert grade. Pep band t-shirts are required for all band students in grades 7-12. Please note whether you need a t-shirt or not on the form at the end of this handbook. Cost is approximately $10-$15, which will be due at the end of the 1st quarter. Grading Students are assessed on the following: Performance 20% Participation 60% Playing Tests/Class Work Practice 10% 10% Practice Expectations A student’s efforts at home affects the success of the group as a whole. 30 minutes EVERY week are due each Friday or the last day of the school week if it is a short week. Please work diligently toward this goal, not only for the good of your individual playing, but also for the good of the entire ensemble. You can now submit practice records ONLINE!
