Course Description

Calculus is part of your collegiate mathematical studies. Calculus was invented over 300 years ago to deal with the rate at which a quantity varies, particularly if the rate does not stay constant. Calculus is also used to find the areas and volumes of irregular shapes. These shapes can represent many different situations including work, distance, volume etc. In calculus you will learn the algebraic formulas for variable rates and areas and volumes that will tie together the mathematics you have learned in earlier courses. The four major concepts of calculus are Limits, Derivatives, Integrals and Indefinite Integrals.

Course Materials

 Textbook: Pearson Calculus-Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic AP Edition, Fourth Edition

(Checked out from library and online at www.mymathlab.com, they will get username and password soon.)

 Graphing Calculator preferably a TI-84 (Can be checked out from library with teacher permission)

Composition book for class notes (100 pages, narrow rule preferable)(Will be used daily student should supply ask if this is a problem) needed by Friday.

Spiral notebook for assignments, Pencils (Students should supply, ask if this is a problem)

 Compasses and protractors will be supplied in class if needed.

Course Objectives: This course is designed to prepare students to successfully take the

Advanced Placement Calculus AB exam. We also closely parallel the topics from Everett

Community College’s Math 152 and153. An opportunity to take this class for college credit will be discussed later.

Classroom Expectations/Management Plan

The purpose of the Behavior Management Guidelines is to foster a safe, positive environment for learning by teaching the practice of self-discipline, citizenship skills, and social skills.

 Come to class with your homework completed and the necessary supplies to work.

 Work cooperatively with your partner or in small groups.

 Listen to directions or to whoever is speaking to the class.

 Technology : All cell phones should be turned off and put away in class. Cell phones being used in class

, unless as part of a lesson(checking messages, texting, answering or making a call) are disruptive to the environment and distract everyone around from participating. Cell phones

may not be used as calculators. I have scientific calculators that can be borrowed as

needed if you don’t have your own.

 Be present, be kind, and be productive.

An incident results when a student’s behavior interferes with the learning process.

1.

First incident: a.

Conference with student, b.

Parent contact, and/or c.

1-2 Detentions

*Any combination of the above

2.

Second incident: a.

Conference with student, b.

2-3 Detentions

*Any combination of the above

3.

Third and any further incidents: a.

Conference with student, b.

Parent contact, and c.

Grading

Purpose of Grading Statement

End of Course Grades (Semester/End of Year):

To communicate information about student proficiency on content standards to students, parents, educators and other stakeholders.

Formative Grades:

• To provide information to students for self-evaluation

• To provide information to classroom/program to inform the next steps of the instruction

Summative Grades:

• To provide evidence of student achievement for the purpose of making a judgment about student competence or program effectiveness against a standard or benchmark

Grading

Students and parents can access grades online through the LMS system. Grades should be checked weekly for most current class status. For information or to log in, go to http://lmsinfo.everettsd.org

90% Summative Assessments: Group test (25%), Individual test (75%)

 Retakes will not be allowed for any chapter tests.

 If you are not going to be present the day of the tests you must tell Ms. Johnson ahead of time. A different, harder test will be given if you take the test after the class test day.

 If a summative assessment is missed the overall grade will be changed to an incomplete until the assessment is completed.

5% Formative Assessments: Formative assessments (2-3 per chapter)

5% Tasks: Class assignments, homework, warm-ups, interactive notebook and group work

 Students will be graded on the quality and completion of the work

Additional help is available before and after school. Office hours are posted outside my classroom door.

Late work policy: The homework must be turned in by the day of the individual test. No more than half credit will be given for worked turned in after the test.

Math support : I am available most days in the morning( 7:05-7:30) and after school ( 2:05-2:40).

 Hours available will be posted outside the classroom door

 Extra afternoon or evening help session may be available as needed, watch the calendar on the

Ms. J Johnson’s website or notes on the board for details.

Absence/Make-up Policy

School rules regarding tardiness, absences and excessive absences will be enforced. Please refer to the student handbook (page 22-23)

 Use the text book website to review material that was taught that day: www.mymathlab.com

 Contact other students for notes or borrow classroom note book

 Make an appointment to get help from the teacher

Academic Honesty

At Everett High School we value honesty and integrity of work. Cheating on tests and homework by copying other people's work is not acceptable. When you cheat, you will receive a failing grade for that learning activity. Cheating also includes the aiding and abetting of cheating by others.
