1. Welcome Back- Attention SSS Students, you are invited to attend the SSS Welcome Back Event
on Thursday, January 15, 2015 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Come and enjoy refreshments, new
information, and information on upcoming events. In addition, you will have an opportunity to
socialize with fellow SSS students! If you would like to attend please RSVP by 5:00 pm, Tuesday,
January 13th, 2015 at sfb19@pitt.edu.
2. Library Books – Reminder, SSS will begin accepting book request at 12:00 am (midnight),
Monday, January 5, 2014, books will be issued on a first come first serve basis. Please send your
request to pitt.sss.library@gmail.com. Please read the directions below, and follow the
procedure.
a. Please note: SSS library policy requires that all books are to be returned by the due
date. If the book or books are not returned by the due date, your request will not be
honored.

To search for books, go to
http://www.librarything.com/catalog/pitt_sss
1. Look for books using the “Search this Library” search
box
a. Failing to do this will result in inaccurate
results
2. If you find a book you need, click the “detail page”
icon on the right
3. Scroll down to the “Comments” section to see if the
book is available (see picture below)
4. If the book is available, send an email to
pitt.sss.library@gmail.com stating:
a. Your Name
b. Full Book Title, Author, Book Edition
5. You will receive a confirmation email when you can
pick up the book. You have three (3) business days,
including the day of the confirmation to pick up your
book(s).
3. Registration- Attention SSS students, if you are having problems or issues with registering for
classes please contact your advisor.
4. Right Start 2- Right Start 2 begins this Thursday, January, 8, 2015. All classes will be held here at
the ARC in classroom A.
5. Right Start 3- Right Start 3 class will begin Wednesday January 14th, 2015 from 5:00 pm to 7:00
pm. All classes will be held here at the ARC in classroom A.
6. Honors College- The University Honors College will be holding information sessions every
Tuesday at 10 AM and Thursday at 3 PM, in Cathedral Room 1229. Come and find out about
new scholarship opportunities:
Featured AWARDS
Gilman (Benjamin A.) International Scholarship funds Federal Pell Grant recipients up to $5,000
for study abroad (4 week minimum). The program aims to encourage students to choose nontraditional study and intern destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia
and New Zealand. The Summer 2015 and Fall 2015 application deadline is March 3, 2015.
Udall Scholarship awards $5,000 to sophomores and juniors from any discipline. Must
demonstrate a commitment to environmental issues through a combination of coursework,
research, internships, jobs, or extracurricular activities. Native American or Alaskan native
students are also eligible for fields related to tribal health care or tribal policy. New extended
campus deadline is February 6, 2015. If interested, contact Shannon at sjm130@pitt.edu ASAP.
US-UK Fulbright Summer Institute provides freshmen and sophomores a summer opportunity
at a UK University to explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK and develop their
academic ability by improving presentation, research and communication skills. Deadline is
February 26 or March 5, 2015.
Public Sector AWARDS
Huntington (Samuel) Public Service Award provides a $10,000 stipend for graduating seniors to
pursue one year of meaningful public service anywhere in the world, before student proceeds
onto graduate school or a career of public service. Must submit a project proposal with budget.
Deadline is January 19, 2015.
Madison (James) Graduate Fellowship provides $24,000 to individuals desiring to become
outstanding teachers of the American Constitution at the secondary school level. Deadline is
March 1, 2015.
Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows program is a summer leadership program for rising juniors
from diverse academic disciplines. Deadline is February 1, 2015.
Pickering (Thomas R.) Foreign Affairs Graduate Fellowship provides academic and professional
preparation for outstanding juniors interested in entering the US Department of State Foreign
Service. Deadline is January 16, 2015.
Rangel (Charles B.) International Affairs Graduate Fellowship Program provides academic and
professional preparation for outstanding students interested in entering the US Department of
State Foreign Service. Deadline is January 14, 2015.
USAID Donald M. Payne International Development Graduate Fellowship provides benefits
toward a two-year master's degree, arranges internships in Washington D.C. and at USAID
missions overseas, and provides professional development and support activities towards a
career with USAID Foreign Service. Deadline is January 20, 2015.
STEM AWARDS
Amgen is a summer research program in science and biotechnology with the opportunity to
engage in a hands-on research experience at a leading US educational institution. Deadline is in
early February 2015.
Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) provides
financial and other support to students who enter a period of study and research in
computational science accompanied by practical work experience at DOE research facilities.
Deadline is January 27, 2015.
Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Stewardship Science
Graduate Fellowship (DOE NNSA SSGF) deadline is January 14, 2015.
Google Anita Borg is for women studying computer science, computer engineering, informatics,
or a closely related technical field and maintaining an excellent academic record. Google Anita
Borg Scholarship recipients will each receive a $10,000 award for the 2015-2016 academic year.
Deadline is January 15, 2015.
Nano Japan: International Research Experience for Undergraduates summer program in Japan
for freshman or sophomores, especially those from underrepresented groups, interested
nanoscience. Deadline is January 23, 2015.
Post Baccalaureate opportunities with the Fulbright US Student Program, Churchill, Gates
Cambridge, Marshall, Mitchell or Rhodes Scholarships! Information sessions will begin at the

UHC FUNDING
David C. Frederick Public Service Award—Funding for unpaid public service internships during
the summer. Award winners receive $3500 to allow them to pursue the internship in lieu of
summer work to pay for living costs. Applications will be accepted through Friday, March 6,
2015, for placements occurring approximately mid-May through early-August.
Summer Off-Campus Research Award— Funding for research projects conducted off-campus.
Applications for the 2015 Summer Term are due Friday, January 30, 2015.
7. Scholarship Opportunities -SAVE the DATE! Special sessions on Goldwater, Truman, Udall,
Beinecke, Fulbright and prestigious UK awards. Thursday, March 19th, 10 AM to 2 PM in the
Cathedral of Learning, Room 1229. Contact Shannon Mischler at sjm130@pitt.edu for more
