Our School
As part of the mandated Full Day Learning provincial
government initiative, Dunning-Foubert now has Full Day
Kindergarten. The program started in September 2012 and
continues to be a fabulous program for our youngest students;
we continue to learn and reflect about our programming for
these students. We have welcomed a group of Early Childhood
Educators who support our teachers with their knowledge and
expertise in working with younger students. This initiative has
been very exciting; we continue to enjoy the learning and
presence of this program in our school. This change has
resulted in facility upgrades, playground redesigns, more
resources and ongoing professional development for our staff
and school.
Dunning-Foubert is proud to be the designated public school for
the Queenswood Heights area of Orleans. We follow a
Balanced Day schedule which reorganizes instructional, recess
and nutritional time into larger, uninterrupted blocks of time; this
approach has been shown to benefit student learning. It does
not affect kindergarten or daycare schedules. Some of the
benefits schools have seen with this model include: less time
spent dressing/undressing during instructional time, more
opportunities for students to eat, more time for extracurricular
practices and less impact of inclement weather days on
students. Feedback indicates that students are happier and
experience fewer discipline problems. The Baanced Day also
improves nutrition, and supports learning and student focus.
When you arrive at Dunning-Foubert, you’ll notice that our
school entrance way reflects our history: past, present and
future. Created by a grade 6 student in 1991, our student crest
is carved in wood and is proudly displayed in our foyer. On the
north wall we have a wonderful Millennium mosaic representing
our future and our love of the Arts. Our gym displays a large
mural made by our intermediate students depicting school unity,
and our junior corridor displays a tile collage with contributions
from every student, celebrating the blending of Queenswood
PS and Dunning-Foubert ES in September 2008.
Educating for Success – Inspiring Learning and Building Citizenship
1
Dunning-Foubert strives to provide an environment that meets the individual needs of
students. The staff, students and parents work together to build a caring and productive
learning community. Our academic programs provide opportunities for students to be
independent thinkers, creative problem solvers, and to develop lifelong learning skills. We
encourage students to gain experience in organizational and leadership activities and to
acquire the skills needed to achieve success in real life. Our school is handicap-accessible
and includes specialized handicap washroom facilities.
We pride ourselves for being a very cohesive, talented staff that works well in this very
community-oriented neighbourhood. Our School Council is vibrant, energetic and
continues to enhance our school with their presence, creativity and involvement .
Our Students
We have an enrolment of approximately 375 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade
8. Most of our students walk to school and stay for lunch, enjoying their time together.
Dunning-Foubert graduating students are received by Sir Wilfrid Laurier S.S. Some, by
application, are accepted into the Arts program at Canterbury H.S. or the IB program at
Colonel By S.S.
Our Staff
Our dynamic teaching staff is an outstanding team which proudly supports the school
community. Assessment and student performance are our major priorities, as we provide
opportunities for excellence in personal and educational development. We have a
dedicated Special Education team who believe in the strengths of our children while
helping them face the challenges they may encounter. We continue to enhance our
learning by following the Board Improvement Plans and creating our School Improvement
Plans with the Board initiatives in mind. Our focus this year is on Numeracy, in particular,
Proportional Reasoning and using creative, critical thinking to solve problems across the
curriculum.
Our support staff is involved and very visible in all capacities of the school. You will often
see our chief custodian greeting students when they come to school. Our Educational
Assistants can be found creating student bulletin boards with the aid of students. Our
Early Child Educators are often on the yard supervising and exploring with the students.

Our Community
Parents and Community
Dunning-Foubert E.S. students benefit from many community partnerships. We welcome
members of the community into our school as volunteers; they assist the school in
numerous ways, including “co-op” students from area high schools, student teachers from
a variety of universities and child and youth workers from Algonquin College. The school
raises money for several organizations such as: UNICEF, the Heart and Stroke
Foundation, the Terry Fox Run, the Education Foundation, The Food Bank and CHEO.
We continue to benefit from the talents and experiences that come from our parents and
community. Most recently, our annual “Craft Fair” offered the community an opportunity to
buy a variety of items, as a fundraiser. The variety of both engaging and creative initiatives
ensures lots of community involvement and participation. We have access to a local
library, an adjacent park with a skating rink, tennis courts, and playing fields, all of which
further enrich our curriculum.
Teacher and parent initiatives have provided the students opportunities to showcase their
many talents in the community through school plays, musicals and concerts by the Jazz
and Concert Bands. This past year we participated in the Capital Region Musicfest. This
year, our bands participated in “A Massed Band” held at Sir Wilfrid Laurier High School.
This band is currently fundraising for a year end trip to Canada’s Wonderland and will also
be performing at a Carleton Ravens’ Basketball game in the new year. Our School
Advisory Council plays a major role in supporting school initiatives, fundraising and
planning community events such as Family Movie Nights, Family Dances, Auctions, Used
Book Sales and our Year End Barbeque/Carnival. We have an established milk program
and offer special lunches every Thursday.
Mission Statement
At Dunning-Foubert Elementary School, we strive to stimulate and support on-going
learning, creativity and success, in a safe and caring environment, while enhancing
community citizenship by promoting positive character and giving back to others.

Programs and Services
Academic Programs
Dunning-Foubert is a dual-track community school offering both English and Early French
Immersion programs. Regular English program students receive 120 hours/year of Core
French with the exception of JK/SK students who receive 60 hours/year (20 minutes/day).
Early French Immersion (EFI):
 Grade 1 students receive 100% French instruction;
 Grades 2 & 3 students - approx. 80% French instruction;
 Grades 4, 5 & 6 receive 60% French instruction; and
 Grades 7 & 8 receive 50% French instruction.
Classroom Organization
Presently, we have two Full Day English Kindergarten classes and two Full Day Immersion Senior
Kindergarten class. We also have six classes in the English program and seven classes in the EFI
program.
Special Education and ESL Programs
Early Identification Procedures
We use an Integrated Special Education delivery model which utilizes our Learning Support
teacher, our Learning Resource/ESL teacher, and two Educational Assistants to provide a
framework of remedial support, educational assessments and counseling. We pride ourselves on
our ability to work as a team to support the needs of our students.
Clubs and Activities
Assemblies and special events support a climate of positive school character. Our elected Student
Council representatives hold a variety of responsibilities and meet regularly with a teacher to
discuss important issues and provide input back to the school. Dunning-Foubert offers a diversified
sports and games program including basketball, volleyball, badminton, football, cross-country and
track and field. Our Junior Boys Volleyball team recently won the OCEAA Regional Championship.
We also offer a variety of other extra-curricular activities including intramural games and choirs.
These activities promote the values of effort and commitment. Our Creative Discovery Day gives
intermediate students a day of design and exploration in an area of interest, and provides
additional opportunities for students to experience a high degree of success. Winter Activity Days
allow our students to choose between full days of skiing or snowboarding or an alternate
experience such as a visit to the MacSkimming Outdoor Education Centre or snowshoeing. We
have monthly Spirit Days, a daily milk program, The Lunch Lady and pizza, pita and subway days.
A variety of concerts are performed by students throughout the year. Music study varies by grade
level and includes a vocal program, recorder, concert band and/or jazz band. Some of our bands
enter festival type competitions. We welcome TUTORS in the school to support student success.
Our Environment Club meets regularly.

Safe Schools Initiatives
Dunning-Foubert E.S. has a Character Code developed by students, staff and parents ensuring
consistency with the Ministry Code of Conduct. It is printed in the student planners and is posted in
all classrooms. We have the following safe school programs:




PALS (Playground Activity Leaders in Schools), where older students engage younger
students in cooperative games over the lunch recess.
A school-wide character program involving regular assemblies where classes present songs,
poems and skits illustrating the character traits, and where students are recognized for their
participation and achievements. Our new school song is sung at these assemblies.
A Recognition Program to support student recognition in demonstrating Character traits. These
certificates are presented at our “Character Assemblies”.
Teachers in all divisions are using the “Think First” safety program that teaches students the
importance of making safe choices as well as Progressive Discipline focussing on the
individual.
We believe in “Restorative Practices” enabling students the opportunity to reflect on their choices
of behaviour and discuss behaviour and strategies for alternative behaviours.

Achievement and School Improvement Planning
Measures of Student Achievement and Success
Our primary students are regularly assessed in reading using a PM Benchmarks leveling
program which identifies the instructional level of students as well as identifying areas for
further development. Our junior and intermediate students are similarly assessed using a
program called CASI (Comprehension, Attitude, Strategies, Interests.) Primary, junior and
intermediate students maintain a portfolio of their work. The portfolio is shown to parents at
student-led conferences. Student data is also collected to assess the effectiveness of
school improvement initiatives. Our students fill out an interest survey of multiple
intelligences to help determine their dominant learning styles, i.e. visual, auditory,
kinesthetic (hands on) etc. Teachers use this information to design their lessons. Students
are involved in various performances of their learning, including public speaking in English
and French and project presentations. Our students also participate in provincial testing in
Grade 3 and Grade 6. The 2011 – 2012 results, as well as 5-year trends, are included
further on in this profile.
School Improvement Plans and Initiatives
At Dunning-Foubert, students regularly participate in initiatives to support others. Past
initiatives include raising money for UNICEF, The Snowsuit Fund, The Education
Foundation, The Terry Fox Run and Jump Rope for Heart. In addition, individual classes
often collect canned goods or gently used snowsuits for worthwhile causes. Our school is
aligned with an OCDSB Instructional Coach who supports our staff in their School
Improvement Initiatives. This support ensures maximum learning, ongoing professional
development and thorough reflection of teaching practices, student engagement and
opportunities to network with other schools that are promoting similar learning goals.
Teachers regularly collaborate, network and observe teaching practices and evaluate
student learning to enhance their own growth. We are also aligned with the Board
initiatives involving creativity and critical thinking.

Leadership Recognition
“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative
to achieve a positive outcome.”
Students
At Dunning-Foubert, students regularly participate in initiatives to support others. Past
initiatives include raising money for UNICEF, The Snowsuit Fund, The Education
Foundation, The Terry Fox Run and Jump Rope for Heart. In addition, individual classes
often collect canned goods or gently used snowsuits for worthwhile causes. Our
junior/intermediate students elect class representatives to a Student Council and student
co-chairs are elected in the fall. Our graduating grade 8 students are recognized for
leadership and curriculum accomplishments at an end of year ceremony. Our older
students support our younger students in both curricular and extra-curricular activities. We
are training many of our junior and intermediate students to be PALS, engaging younger
students in cooperative games and teaching them to use the games painted on the
playground asphalt. Our students recycle to reduce garbage. Technology is a part of
school life and most of our junior/intermediate students participate in a Science Invention
Fair. Our “Tech Crew” is responsible for setting up necessary equipment for
presentations, assemblies and workshops. Our mobile lab is used throughout the days
and across the grades.
Staff
Our Dunning-Foubert staff is comprised of teachers, an office administrator and assistant,
custodians, a library technician, educational assistants, early childhood educators, a vice-principal
and a principal, all of whom are committed to making a positive difference for students every day.
We pride ourselves in collectively working collaboratively as a team and as such, staff leaders
often overlap, sharing and supporting a range of student activities. Collectively we have a wealth of
experience and professional qualifications including Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Arts, Fine
Arts, Physical Education and Sciences, as well as additional qualifications in Special Education,
English as a Second Language, French as a Second Language, Music, Visual Arts, Guidance, and
Computers in Education. We actively participate in numerous Board-wide professional
development activities in literacy and numeracy, and we continue to prioritize professional growth.
We also recognize that many of our staff are leaders outside of school, as they support community
interests and groups, present workshops, coach and participate in marathons and fundraising that
demonstrate their commitment to being life-long learners. Newsletters are sent to parents
electronically as we actively try to limit our use of paper. We have a very active “Environment
Team Staff Leader’ who continues to present new initiatives, such as the “Boomerang Lunch”.
Parents/Guardians/Volunteers
Last year, our volunteers contributed many hours of support for the benefit of students in our
school. Our dedicated School Council meets monthly and contributed over $20,000 to support
school initiatives and improvements. Parents are encouraged to join our school committees and
planning teams to support school events. We thank our parents, guardians and volunteers on an
on-going basis, and we celebrate together at our annual Volunteer Appreciation event. We
welcome new members to our vibrant group and share ideas and suggestions in a productive and
collaborative manner. We have further created a spreadsheet to enhance participation in all areas
of the school, enabling volunteers to participate in any capacity according to what they may be
available to do as per their available times.

Community
Our larger school community enjoys the use of our school facilities after school hours through a
Board-run leasing program. Many youth organizations like Guides and Scouts, as well as sports
leagues and cheer-leading teams, have weekly or monthly meetings at Dunning-Foubert, and they
enjoy the use of our gym. We also participate in a Terry Fox Walk with our neighbour school, Our
Lady of Wisdom. This partnership brings our school communities together to support a very
worthwhile cause. In addition, our parents support our school music efforts whenever students
become actively involved in local music concerts and events. We share the building with Children’s
Universe Daycare, which offers a preschool program and a school-age program. There are several
other daycares within our boundaries such as; the Cumberland Hub, the YMCA and the
Queenswood Heights Community Centre. Some of our students are eligible for busing to these
facilities.
