Achievement and School Improvement Planning
Measures of Student Achievement and Success
Our school follows the guidelines set out in the OCDSB Policy and Procedures for Student
Evaluation, available on the Board’s website. Students strive to achieve the Honour Roll
and Principal’s Academic Awards, which are presented each term to students who meet
the criteria. Students achieving at this high level all year are presented with a medal of
recognition.
Citizenship and Effort Awards
Grade 6 awards: grade 6 recipients are nominated by staff. The award is presented to
students who demonstrate a positive attitude, good citizenship, and leadership in the
class, school and community.
Brian Lebreton-Holmes Award: presented to the grade 7 student who demonstrates a
positive attitude, good citizenship, and leadership in class, school and community.
Valedictorian Award: presented to a grade 8 student who reflects the student body, is an
all-round individual, is involved in school life, is academically sound and displays the
values of citizenship and exemplary conduct.
Ontario Principals Council Award: presented to a grade 8 student who demonstrates
outstanding leadership skills.
Athletic Leadership Awards are presented to grade 8 students who have amassed at
least 30 points through their involvement in the athletic program over the course of their
three years at the school.
Visual Art, Drama and Music Awards: Our students maintain a portfolio of their work.
The portfolio is shared with parents at student led conferences, at home, or at parentteacher interviews.
School Improvement Plans and Initiatives
Cedarview staff meets regularly to examine assessment data and determine areas of
student strength and need. The data provides the basis for selecting strategic S.M.A.R.T.
goals for the school improvement plan. The area of focus and S.M.A.R.T. goals change
throughout the year based on a variety of assessment data collected periodically.
In 2011-2012 we continued our progress through a focus on critical thinking across the
curriculum, including reading, writing and mathematics. We expanded our use of
technology to further engage students in their learning through the use of SMART boards,
media carts, interactive software and assistive technology.
In developing a School Improvement Plan we examine a variety of data sources. Along
with the analysis of our EQAO results and CASI assessments, we also review daily
observations of student performance, report card marks and comments, OCDSB
diagnostic tests, surveys, documents, administrative records, School Council input, and a
variety of demographic factors.

For 2012-2013 our school is focusing on both literacy and numeracy with an emphasis on
providing effective feedback during the learning process and creating critical thinking tasks
in all subject areas. Through professional development of staff and sharing of best
practices pertaining to differentiated instruction, the gradual release of responsibility ,
explicit teaching of reading, writing and math skills and strategies, we will advance student
learning in these areas. The school environment will feature student achievement and
engage children in learning.
In Numeracy, we continue to work on developing our students' proficiency in
communicating mathematical ideas, with a particular focus on mathematical investigations
using manipulatives. Emphasis will be placed on further developing students' problem
solving and critical thinking skills. We believe that this will contribute to our students'
success. We will continue to build a professional learning community through collaborative
teamwork, reflection, curriculum development and addressing the needs of students at
risk.

Leadership Recognition
“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative
to achieve a positive outcome.”
Students
Leadership opportunities are encouraged for students at Cedarview. Our students
demonstrate leadership in sports, where they are Board champions in a variety of sports.
Former Cedarview students are athletic leaders who receive scholarships from
universities. Our Junior and Senior Concert and Jazz bands perform at a high level in
MusicFest each year. Our active student council provides leadership opportunities in
citizenship, social justice and student voice. Our students participate in a number of
fundraising and volunteer initiatives from which they gain new learning and the satisfaction
of helping others. In addition to informal recognition on a regular basis, we also
acknowledge student contributions to the school community in our classrooms, school
announcements, newsletters, assemblies, the Principal's report to School Council, and
end-of-year awards ceremonies.
Staff
Our staff members have a wealth of professional qualifications including Bachelors and
Masters degrees in Arts, Fine Arts, Physical Education, Sciences, Social Studies and
Counseling, as well as additional qualifications in Special Education, English as a Second
Language, Music, Visual Arts, Guidance, and Computers in Education. They actively
participate in numerous District-wide professional development activities in all subject
areas, and we recognize their initiative by providing and supporting opportunities for
further professional growth. Support staff work tirelessly and patiently to address the
school’s physical plant, student needs, parent requests and community connections. We
also recognize staff leadership via personal interactions with one another, letters of
thanks, school announcements, school newsletters, assemblies, performance appraisals,
and our Principal’s report to School Council. We will continue to support staff through our
mentoring and team teaching programs, which serve to enhance professional practice.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers
Our volunteers contribute countless hours of support for the benefit of students in our
school. As invaluable partners, we thank our parents, guardians and volunteers on an
ongoing basis, and look for opportunities to acknowledge them such as school
announcements, the Principal's report to School Council, school newsletters, and our
annual volunteer appreciation breakfast. Volunteers make possible many school activities
including field trips, fundraisers, classroom support and much more. Our dedicated School
Council meets monthly and contributes a wealth of new resources of benefit to students in
the classroom.
Community
Cedarview is a training site for high school, college and university students who provide
our teachers and students with additional support and specialized skills in the classroom.
Examples include partnerships with Algonquin and the University of Ottawa, Associate
Teachers and high school Co-op Programs. Local businesses contribute significantly to
our music program and other student activities.
