Topic: Digestive System
Lesson Focus/Theme:
Overall Expectation: E1. Analyze the relationships between changing societal needs, technological advances, and
our understanding of internal systems of humans; E2 investigate, through laboratory inquiry or computer
simulation, the functional responses of the respiratory and circulatory systems of animals, and the relationships
between their respiratory, circulatory, and digestive systems; E3. Demonstrate and understanding of animal
anatomy and physiology.
Specific Expectations: E1.1 Evaluate the importance of various technologies, including Canadian contributions, to
our understanding of the internal body systems; E1.2 Assess how societal needs lead to scientific and technological
developments related to internal systems; E2.1 Use appropriate terminology related to animal anatomy; E3.2
explain the anatomy of the digestive system and the importance of digestion in providing nutrients for energy and
growth
Learning Goals: Understand how lifestyle choices affect the obesity epidemic. Use knowledge gained from the
Recent Research Assignment to strengthen your points in the debate. Communicate your views and beliefs about
the surgery and use correct terminology.

-Divide the class into two groups. One side will be in
favour of having the bariatric surgery for youth and view
technology as an advancement that helps save youth and
gives them a better quality of life. The other side will be
in favour of restricting the surgery to only adults and view
technology as an alternative way to avoid exercising.
-Notice how
the groups formulate and communicate their
points. Are they using proper terminology, thinking in a
logical manner, including points that have been
researched?
