As we begin the New Year, changes to the Response to Intervention (RTI) classes will be

exams in the areas of Biology, English 2, Algebra 2, and U.S. History.
Senior and junior parents and students: please make sure you read the notes from Mrs.
Rose concerning FAFSA, colleges, scholarships, applications, etc. The time has come to
prepare for what lies ahead concerning post-secondary choices whether it is the work
force, the military, or college. Students must be completing applications to colleges,
applications for scholarships, updating and completing their ILP, and so many other
things. Parents please encourage your child and ask them frequently about their
choices, decisions, and goals.

Counselor’s Notes from Mrs. Rose
SENIORS:
Parents & Students: Contact Mrs. Rose to get individual help with submitting your FAFSA. Scheduled dates are
January 10 and January 14 by appointment only.

If you’re accepted for early decision, withdraw applications to other schools.

Gather information you need to file the FAFSA. Submit it as soon as possible after Jan. 1. The best way to
file is online at www.fafsa.gov.
 Complete any additional financial aid applications required by schools. Keep copies of everything you send.
 Contact colleges to make sure they received your application.
 Submit mid-year grade reports to schools that require them.
Many scholarships are due this month! Don't miss these deadlines!!!
JUNIORS:
Meet with your counselor to set your senior schedule. Don’t take easy classes.

Talk with your counselor about AP, IB and dual credit courses.

Talk with people who may be willing to write recommendations for scholarships and colleges. If they’re
willing to help, give them a brief list of your academic, extracurricular and volunteer activities for reference.
SOPHOMORES:
 Sign up for challenging classes as a junior. It may help with scholarships and getting into the school of your
choice.
 Talk with your counselor about AP, IB and dual credit courses.
 Continue to explore interests and careers that you think you might like.
 Keep your grades up so you can have the highest GPA and class rank possible.
FRESHMEN:
Meet with your school counselor to set your sophomore schedule. A tough course load may pay off with scholarships
and help you get into the school of your choice.
MIDDLE SCHOOL:



Explore careers on your ILP!
Learn about KEES money on kheaa.com or ask your counselor!
Strengthen your study habits:
Doing these things will help you make more effective use of your study time;
 Have a quiet, well-lit place to study.
 Find a study time that works best for you — before dinner, after dinner, whenever.
 Keep distractions such as TV or music to a minimum. Better yet, don’t have the TV on at all.
 Plan ahead. Make sure you have everything you need before you start — textbook, paper, pen or pencil, arts
and crafts supplies, reference materials.
 Be organized. Keep track of important papers, and use a planner to keep track of when assignments are
due and tests are scheduled. Check things off as they get done.
 Prioritize. You may like history better, but your science report is due before your history paper. Do the
science one first.
 Read your textbook. You can skim the section headings first to get an idea of what the chapter is about, but
then go back and read the chapter slowly.
 As you read, underline or make a note of what seems important and may be on a test. Make a note if you
don’t understand something so you can get help.
 Set clear, reasonable goals
Gifted News from Mrs. Mahan
FHS gifted and talented students are fortunate to be a part of the Quad District Gifted Consortium that includes
Fulton City, Fulton County, Carlisle County, and Hickman County. This past semester, Fulton High School
students studied Picasso and particularly Picasso's work entitled "Three Musicians." Students at FHS also
participated in The Stock Market Game and developed PowerPoint presentations on famous artists.
Second semester will find FHS students learn how to develop EXCEL spreadsheets using Microsoft Office.

Library News from Mrs. Parr
Please join us for a very special Family Reading Night from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 21 in the Carr
Library. This reading night will be completely funded by a grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation. Carr was
awarded this grant to enrich our students’ culturally through art and bring the community together through family
centered activities. We will feature books written by Ezra Jack Keats. With their parents, students will also
complete an art project in the style of his illustrations. Snacks will be served. In addition, every student who attends
will receive a book written by Ezra Jack Keats. I am really looking forward to the event, and hope that everyone is
able to attend!
Nurse’s Notes from Mrs. Lawrence
In 2014, we are working hard at Fulton Independent School to become healthier. We are continuing to encourage
parents to bring healthy snacks during parties, sending healthy lunches with students who don’t eat lunch at school,
and encouraging more physical activity. Try to decrease their time at the computer, Wii, Gameboy, iPad, or
whatever item they use at home. Get your child to go outside and run, ride their bike, play football, baseball,
basketball, soccer, or walk around the block with the neighborhood children or with a parent. GET ACTIVE. We
need to also eat healthier. Make this a family resolution and let’s do better in 2014.
The Wellness Committee is very active at Fulton. It is our job to make sure our students are receiving healthy
meals per the guidelines of the state and the physical activity which they are receiving from Take 10 and our
Physical Education teacher Brad Rozzell. The staff works together for the benefit of our students to make sure they
have a healthy, nutritional, well-rounded education while at Fulton Independent School. Our committee is also
developing a program for the staff to participate in after school. We want everyone to be healthy both students and
staff.
The Wellness Committee will be presenting the Physical Activity and Nutrition Report Card at the Board Meeting
from 6:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. January 14. The community is invited to attend and ask questions.
As always, we appreciate your support and everything you do for the children.
