T.C. ATILIM UNIVERSITY Department of Foreign Languages 201-2014 Spring FLR 002 Communication Skills II 1. To gain students basic Russian reading, writing, speaking and understanding General Aim skills. 2. By studying the texts and dialogues in the course book, students try to use daily Russian language. 3. At the end of this level, students are going to be capable of reading and asking questions of an intermediate level texts and communicate. In accordance with the purposes and academic calender, the students are aimed to: Course Goals And Content 1. Phonetic and pronunciation: practising Russian phonetic rules and pronunciation activities are done. 2. Texts: logic of Russian language and speaking structures are covered by the help of coursebook texts and dialogues. 3. New vocabulary: practising new vocabulary with their meanings and using them in daily conversations. 4. Essential daily vocabulary is taught and sentence structure types are explained. The differences between Turkish and Russian are compared. 5. Reading and revision: The known vocabulary, sentence and phrases are reviewed by reading and speaking skills developing exercises. 6. Exercises: practising Russian by the exercises in the course book and prepaired materials. 7. Grammar: practicing grammar structures given in the texts and daily conversations. 8. Culture: Basic Russian language and culture information is given. National songs are listened. During the course time, in order to reach the targetted objectives, students are going Specific Course Activities to realise the following activities: 1. Attend and participate to the lesson 2. read the texts and dialogues, practise the related activities. 3. propose, guess and develop ideas and express them in suitable ways. 4. study vocabulary and develop meaning guessing techniques. 5. practise on Russian grammar structures for effective usage. 1 6. make presentations on defined subjects. 7. Participate actively in all activities like reading, writing, speaking and listening. The selected course book is both used in Russia and suitable for Russian learning Course Material students. Students have to buy the original published book. In addition, students can do listening activities from the CD given with the course book. Course Assessment The students will be assessed as follows during the semester: Midterm 40% Final 60% Total: 100% Grading Scale The following letter grade system will be employed for this course. Students should not expect a ‘Curve’ to be employed. DFL reserves the right to announce a Catalog or Curve. The students who exceed 30% attendance limit will not be able to take the final exam. 2. Attendance is taken at the end of each class hour. Students are required to keep track of their own attendance. The instructor is not responsible for supplying regular attendance figures to students. 3. Medical reports are only accepted to give a chance to take the exams missed other than the final only if they are submitted in due course and with proper attribution to the regulations of the university. 2 4. Students must attend and be prepared to become an active and successful participant of the course. To do this: a. They have to come to class with the relevant course material. (Notebook, pen, course book, reading material, etc.). b. They should keep the deadlines of assignments and tasks. c. They should actively participate in the classroom discussions. d. They are not allowed to activate mobile phones during class. 6. Students have to be punctual to all lessons. 7. Academic honesty is expected from all students. Plagiarism is using another person's ideas, words, and style without citing its source. This is stealing and will not be tolerated.
