This course has been an established experiential training in dance/movement therapy since 1972 and has been attended by many of the current leaders in the field. Approved by the ADTA for alternate route students, the course includes 60 contact hours in Dance/Movement Therapy theory and skills, group process and movement observation. It is open to practicing and student dance therapists, mental health providers, graduate and undergraduate students in related fields, and others interested in non-verbal communications. This course is known for small classes which allows for both group and individualized instruction. An authorized certificate will be issued on completion of the course. The ADTA defines dance therapy as the PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC USE OF MOVEMENT to further the emotional and physical integration of the individual. This course will integrate the theories and practice of dance therapy through intensive, personal involvement with the following techniques: Concepts of Marian Chace Dance Therapy Concepts of Mary Whitehouse Dance Therapy Effort/Shape Movement Analysis Discussion of Research in Non Verbal Behavior Clinical Field Experience *Dance Therapy with Special Populations Group Dynamics Leadership Techniques Film Screenings Daily Dance Classes Dance Therapy Training Opportunities *(Children, adolescents, elderly, acute and chronic schizophrenics and neurotic patients in private practice) The concepts and techniques of Dance Therapy are useful to professionals in the fields of psychiatry, counseling, psychology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, social work, nursing and dance as well as to dance therapists. Dance therapists are employed in psychiatric hospitals, community mental health centers, special schools, correction centers, day care centers, private practice and many other agencies. Linni Deihl, M.Ed., BC-DMT, LCAT, maintains an extensive private practice specializing in psychogenic somatic disorders. A dance movement therapist since 1964, she supervises dance therapy students, has taught at many universities, and for the last 39 years has taught this Intensive June course. Currently on the Dance Movement Therapy Credentials Board, she is a past ADTA board member, edited the Dance Therapy Bibliography, and is widely published. She is the recipient of the 2007 ADTA Award “Excellence in Education”. She is on the board of Survivors' Art Foundation and is the director/choreographer of a youth liturgical dance group.
