Bayou View Middle School – Weekly Lesson Plans Teacher: Angelia Wallace Week of: February 2, 2015 Subject: 6th Science Plate Tectonic Theory development Lesson Plan subject to change due to needs of students. Classroom News/Due Dates: Power Hour- Monday Progress Reports Thursday 3.2 Assessment Friday- Pangaea and Plate Tectonics (NOT open notebook) Mardi Gras Holiday February 16-18 Standards: 6.4a Compare and contrast the relative positions and components of the Earth’s crust (e.g., mantle, liquid and solid core, continental crust, oceanic crust). 8.4a Compare and contrast the lithosphere and the asthenosphere. a. Composition, density, and location of continental crust and oceanic crust b. Physical nature of the lithosphere (brittle and rigid) with the asthenosphere (plastic and flowing) c. How the lithosphere responds to tectonic forces (faulting and folding) 7.4a Justify the importance of Earth materials (e.g., rocks, minerals, atmospheric gases, water) to humans. 6.4b Explain and raw conclusions about the causes and effects of historical processes that contributed to the shaping of planet Earth. a. Movements of the continents through time b. Continental plates, subduction zones, trenches, etc. c. Explain the causes and effects of historical processes shaping the planet Earth 8.4b Describe the cause and effect relationship between the composition of and movement within the Earth’s lithosphere. a. Seismic wave velocities of earthquakes and volcanoes to lithospheric plate boundaries using seismic data b. Volcanoes formed at mid‐ocean ridges, within intra‐plate regions, at island arcs, and along some continental edges c. Modern distribution of continents to the movement of lithospheric plates since the formation of Pangaea Day/Date Procedures Assessment Objectives Bell Schedule Bell Work Regular schedule Closure ANTICIPATORY SET : Pass out Oreos and set up notebook paper for the inquiry lab we are doing today. Monday 2-9-15 TI = Teacher Input, M = Modeling, GP = Guided Practice, IP = Independent Practice TTW = “The teacher will…” TSW = “The students will…” (“The student will…”) Read “Sea Floor Spreading” and answer comprehensi on questions. The student can make observations that pertain to plate boundaries. TSW complete bellwork TTW go over bellwork TTW pass out Oreos for today’s activity TSW complete a chart making observations about transform, divergent, and convergent plate boundaries. TTW discuss the results of this inquiry activity TSW summarize what they did in class today. Students will be assessed by textbased questions. How does this activity relate to the movement of the lithosphere? Tuesday 2-10-15 Regular Schedule Read “Going Deep With Plate Tectonics” and answer comprehensi on questions. The student can read, understand, and summarize information about plate tectonics. Wednesday 2-11-15 Regular Schedule Copy plate boundaries chart into notebook. The student can recall and build upon knowledge of the plate boundaries. Thursday 2-12-15 Regular Schedule TSW complete BW TTW go over BW TSW create a foldable using the information from the text TTW check for accuracy ANTICIPATORY SET: Jot though! Quickly jot all the information you already know into the chart! TTW give guided notes to students about plate tectonics. TSW fill in a chart about each boundary and see examples of each. TSW work with classmates to find more information about the plate boundaries in their textbooks. TSW be assigned a boundary and will create an anchor chart to share with the class. Teacher observation Teacher observation Class discussion Sing the song! Teach the class using anchor charts, time permitting. ANTICIPATORY SET: Task Card activity. Make sure all assignments are complete before test tomorrow. Friday 2-13-15 ANTICIPATORY SET: Plate Boundaries sung (sung to the tune of “Adams Family”) Sharpen pencils The student can show mastery of plate tectonic topics by completing a task card review activity The student can show mastery of topics covered in class. TSW work through a task card activity with their groups. TTW go over the activity and have students self-check for accuracy TSW highlight missed information in their notebooks to help them study for the 3.2 assessment on Friday. Teacher observation Final questions and clarifications! Assessment Grade Turn in test and read quietly until everyone has finished testing. ANTICIPATORY SET: Sharpen pencil, get a book to read after the test, put up testing screens. 3.2 Assessment- Pangaea and Plate Tectonics. Regular ***This test is NOT open notebook so study!!!!*** Schedule Earth Guide Classroom online http://earthguide.ucsd.edu/eoc/teachers/t_tectonics/t_tectonics.html
