Biome Project Layout-PowerPoint Presentation 1st Annual Biomes Conference Ms. Green’s Science Class 2010 1. The name of your biome should appear clearly on your FIRST slide and should be larger than all other writing. All group members’ names must be printed clearly on the first slide along with The 1st Annual Biomes Conference Ms. Green’s Science Class 2010. Consider this a “cover page” for your presentation. It should be neat and colorful. 2. All of the following information must appear in your presentation: Pictures/ Clip Art on each Slide that are relevant to your biome or the material you are discussing Map or a Globe showing the locations of the biome in the world At least one graph from each scientist Answers for EACH of the Four Scientific Roles. (You may have more than one answer on a slide, but limit answers to Three. Remember YOU are the teacher and you do not want too much information to clutter your slides.) HINT- when preparing your slides, use the bold face words as the “title” and your answer as the “subtitle” Climatologist: QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED FOR THE LAND BIOMES: 1. What is the average annual temperature? 2. What is the average annual precipitation? Is the precipitation greater during one time of the year? 3. Are there any seasons common to areas within this biome? If so, describe. 4. Do the answers to items 1-3 differ for different locations within this biome? 5. Are there any mountains, oceans, volcanoes, or other natural features that contribute to the climate of the regions in your biome? 6. How does the tilt of the earth's axis and the angle of sunlight hitting these regions effect the climate? 7. Between what lines of latitude do most regions of this biome fall within? 8. Does this type of biome experience any draughts, floods, hurricanes, or other major storms on a regular basis? 9. What type of winds affect these regions? What are they called? What direction do they blow from? 10. Describe what "growing season" means. What is the length of the typical growing season for this biome? ...or is there no growing season? Biologist: QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED: 1. Make a list of the different countries that are within this biome. Use this list to help you with the following questions. 2. What are some of the plants, animals, and other living things that are found in your biome? How do they vary from country to country, or from continent to continent? (name at least 5 of each) 3. Are any of the animals or plants from this biome considered rare or endangered? 4. Are there any "introduced species" that have affected the native plants and animals of this biome? 5. Are any of the plants or animals poisonous? If so, tell us something about them? 6. What are the largest plants and animals? The smallest? 7. What types of medicine can be made from the plants? What types of fruits do the plants bear? Environmentalist: 1. QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED: 1. What types of pollution effect this biome? (air, water, soil) 2. What human activities endanger or damage areas of this biome? (deforestation, tourism, urban sprawl, increase in population, agriculture, industrial waste, etc.) 3. What natural disasters endanger or damage areas of this biome? (volcano, hurricane, typhoon) 4. What are individuals and private organizations trying to do about it? 5. What are governments trying to do about it? 6. Are there any "protected" regions established to preserve parts of this biome? (World Heritage locations, state or federal parks or preserves, etc.) 7. What sources are there for drinking water? (lakes, rivers, underground water tables/rivers) 8. What kind of diseases or health problems are caused by "bad" water quality? 9. Create a food chain or web that includes at least 8 organisms that live in your biome (you may use Word) Geologist: QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED FOR LAND AND MARINE BIOMES: 1. Are there any earthquake / fault lines or volcanoes in areas of your biome? 2. Have there been any large scale natural disasters caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or tidal waves in any area of your 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. biomes over the last ten years? If so, when, where, what was the damage to humans, the environment, or the economy? If there are mountains in any area of your biome, where are they, how high are they, when did they form? Do they effect the climate? Are there any mineral or oil deposits in areas of your biome? If so, how does this effect the environment or economy? Describe the terms: ground water and water table. Are there any famous areas that were created by rivers or glaciers? Describe them. Create a list of some of the major rivers of the world and be able to show where they are. Research the water sources in Michigan and share how they are used, where or how they originated, and other interesting facts about them. What effect does running water (rivers and streams) have on the earth and rock around it? (explain erosion caused by water) BIBLIOGRAPHY of all works cited-(list the websites you went to get your information) Good luck in your role as scientists and I wish you well on your Biome Project!
