2016 Lawrence High School Local Scholarship Packet
All local Scholarship Applications are due by Monday, February 22, 2016. No late applications will be
accepted. Please apply only for the scholarships you are eligible by using the correct application form and
attaching all required materials. An incorrect or incomplete application form will result in disqualification.

Al Deiser Memorial Scholarship
Applicants must have graduated from South Junior High and are pursuing a career in a skilled trade.
Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and demonstrate financial need. Applicants must have been involved
in school activities and plans to attend any 4-year college/university or 2-year junior
college/vocational and/or technical school.

Al Woolard Memorial Scholarship
Applicants must be involved in the LHS athletic program and have a minimum GPA of 2.0. Applicants
must have superior attendance in grades 10-12 and exhibit qualities of sportsmanship, leadership,
effort, and desire. This scholarship can be used at any post-secondary education institution.

This award is open to any student for any field of study or school of choice. Applicants must answer

Applicants must be female students with plans to attend a Kansas college. Applicants must

Applicants must be interested in pursuing a career in the health-related or medical field, with priority

Bill Self Assists Foundation Scholarship
This is a four-year scholarship. Recipients must provide documentation to the Lawrence Schools
Foundation on an annual basis for renewal of scholarship. Applicants must complete a special
application and provide a one-page essay explaining why they believe they should receive an
Assists Scholarship and how they have worked to help provide young people access to better
lives. To be eligible to apply, students must be involved in extracurricular or community service
activities, demonstrate leadership roles, and plan to attend a two or four year college or university or
formal trade education program.

Applicants must be in the top 35% of their class and have a minimum ACT composite score of 21 or a
980 or higher on the SAT. Applicants’ parents/guardians must be customers of Black Hill Energy.

Hope Scholar Award Scholarship (NAACP)
Applicants must have a GPA of 1.5-2.9 and plan on attending any accredited vocational, technical or
post-secondary institution. Applicants must be considered a minority per the 2010 United States
Census classifications. Applicants must provide one brief letter of recommendation from a high
school teacher, counselor, coach, club sponsor, current employer, or community member (nonrelative). The 2016 NAACP scholarship competition addresses “The Voting Right Act of 1965”
Why It’s Still an Issue in 2016—The applicant must submit a short essay, 250 words, addressing
the importance of youth activism for social justice regarding voting rights.

Awarded to a graduating senior at Lawrence High School who plans to attend the University of

during his/her high school year.

Lawrence Business Exchange Entrepreneurial Scholarship
Applicants must complete one of the following three options: 1) Create a business plan that includes
capital/financing, goals, and schedule of activity. 2) Write a 300-500 word essay on entrepreneurial
experience. 3) Demonstrate your business management experience. You can use your creativity to
convey your experience. The finalists will be asked to give presentations to the Lawrence Business
Exchange.

Applicants must intend to major in Vocal Music or Music Education with a Vocal Music emphasis.

program, a list of school honors and awards and activities, a statement regarding their experiences in

At least one scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior girl who has been a registered

service to Hidden Valley Camp.

group’s purpose and activities include promoting interfraternity friendships, publicizing the ideals and

community activities. The scholarship committee is looking for a student who has faced adversity in their life
and rose above it. In addition to the application, students must provide two letters of recommendation.

W. E. Harwood Music Scholarship
Applicants must be pursing music (choir, instrumental, orchestra, or dance) major in college and play
an active role in the music department. Applicant must maintain a 3.00 or higher GPA.
Additional Requirements: 1 letter of recommendation from Music Department member and 1 letter
of recommendation from another teacher or staff member at LHS

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.-Chi Delta Zeta Chapter Scholarship
Applicants must have a minimum of 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Must be accepted for
enrollment in 4-year accredited institution or a two year accredited institution with plans to complete
an undergraduate degree. Students must provide proof of full-time enrollment at a college or
university to receive payment. In addition to the application and transcript, a personal essay is
required.
