Breakout group leaders are assigned to coach small groups in the activity at hand. Case Reviews and Feedback Students are assigned homework each evening of camp, to memorize and practice their speeches (speech camp), or develop their cases and argumentation (debate camp). Interns mentor students throughout this process, reviewing their homework each morning of camp, helping students identify areas of weakness, and brainstorm ways to strengthen their position. Training Some interns may be asked to conduct a 20-30 minute training session in an area of their specialty. Demos Some interns may be asked to demo a speech there were successful with in competition, or demo the camp case to introduce students to the new debate topic. Games Organization and Leadership Some interns will prepare and lead games/activities designed to ease beginners into public speaking and critical-thinking. Some of these activities are designed to introduce students to the new debate topic. Mini-Tournament Each camp ends with a mini-competition where campers apply all they have learned. Interns assist the Camp director in running the tournament, which includes printing and organizing ballots, posting room signs, and judging rounds. Parent Presentation & Recognition After the mini-competition, each camp ends with awards for top placements in the mini-competition and a wrap-up for the parents. Interns will prepare the largest classroom for the parent presentation. This includes setting up the projector, slideshow of camp pictures, PowerPoint wrap-up slides, table (for debate demo), chairs, and welcoming parents. Check-in/ Lunch Coordinator Some interns will be responsible for checking students in each morning, collecting lunch orders/money, and ordering and picking up lunch. Facility Assistant Interns are responsible for setting up the main room and breakout rooms to meet the camp needs, then resetting the rooms at the end of the camp. Book Table Interns will setup the curriculum and resource table each week, keeping inventory and answering parents’ questions. Photographer An intern skilled in photography will be responsible for taking pictures throughout the camp – candid, posed, group, and otherwise – and compiling them into a slideshow for the Parent Presentation. Therefore, the emphasis of our training is to teach students to examine the underlying premise/assumptions of their position and positions expressed by others, and articulate their views clearly and persuasively. We believe that students who have the critical-thinking skills to analytically process the ideas they are confronted with in our culture, and the communication skills to articulate their views persuasively, are better equipped to stand firm when challenged by opposing worldviews and make a positive impact on those around them.
