Practicum Position Title: Occupational Therapy Assistant
# of Positions Available: 1
Industry/Company Description: Wentworth Manor, Brenda Strafford Foundation Ltd.
Wentworth Manor is an assisted living facility and full-time care facility for seniors. There are 96 long-term
care beds in Wentworth Manor as well 114 assisted living beds. The student placement is with the 96
long-term care beds in Wentworth Manor.
Location: 5717 – 14th Avenue SW, Calgary Alberta, T3H 3M2
Required Hours: 60-72 hours per term – evenly dispersed throughout term:
 5-6 hours per week during fall and winter terms (13 weeks)
 10-12 hours per week during spring term (6 weeks)
Academic Session: Fall, Winter and Spring sessions.
Specified Schedule: To be determined.
Project Duties/Responsibilities: During the course of the placement, the student will be observing and
actively participating as appropriate with both the Occupational Therapist and the Therapy Assistant.
Working alongside the Occupational Therapist and other professional staff at Wentworth Manor, the
student will:





Under supervision of the Occupational therapist, observe initial assessments, wheelchair seating
and positioning assessments, and swallowing assessments to determine the resident’s therapy
needs.
Under direct supervision, observe tone reducing techniques and learn methods for reducing
contractures in residents. Prevention of wounds and appropriate protocol for wound care.
Alongside the therapy assistant help repair and modify changes to the residents’ wheelchairs and
walkers.
Assist therapy assistant with set-up of range of motion, strengthening, and balance programs. As
well help with group exercises and walking programs.
General interaction with various residents, which involves assisting residents with there exercises,
ensuring that they are using proper technique, and addressing questions or concerns that they
may have (within the student’s scope).
Required Student Qualifications: Undergraduate Kinesiology student with 20 HCEs completed.
