Second Grade News Miss Scherba’s Class Week of October 28, 2013 – November 1, 2013 Language Arts – This week, we will begin Unit 2.1 – The Tiny Seed. We will discuss children’s experiences with and knowledge of plants. We will learn about the parts of plants and how plants grow. We will spell words with short and long u (i.e. sun and cube). In grammar, we will learn about nouns that name people, places, and things and how to use commas in a series. While reading, we will use facts to draw conclusions. We will write a how-to poster. Lesson 6.1 - Students will count back 1, 2, or 3 to find differences from 20 or less. Tuesday – Lesson 6.2 – Students will use fact families to find sums and differences. Wednesday – Lesson 6.3 – Students will use addition to model subtraction as an inverse operation. Thursday – Lesson 6.4 – Students will identify missing addends in addition and subtraction sentences. Homework: RW 27/28 Friday – Lesson 6.5 – Students will understand there are different ways to name a number. They will be permitted to leave their bracelets at school each day so they can participate in the daily drawings. If your child brings his/her bracelet home during the week, please return it to school the next morning so he/she can be entered into the drawing for that day. Thank you! Halloween Party – Our school Halloween Party will be held on Friday, November 1st. The party will begin at 2:30 p.m. Students will be putting their Halloween costumes on shortly before the party/parade begins. Please do not send make-up or hair accessories that the students cannot put on by themselves. No face paint please. I will be available to help the students get ready, but we will not have time for intricate hair or make-up. Also, please do not send in a treat for the class unless you were assigned to do so by our Homeroom Representatives. If you were asked to send in a treat, please make sure it is individually packaged so that it can be easily distributed and sent home. Thank you for your help and cooperation!
