School of health placements Nursing and midwifery Placements will be within the geographical area around your allocated host site. For example: if you are hosted at Northampton General Hospital, you may undertake placements in Northampton, Daventry, Towcester and surrounding areas if you are hosted at Kettering General Hospital, you may undertake placements in Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough, Rushden and surrounding areas If you are allocated to Milton Keynes General Hospital you will only attend placements in Milton Keynes or Bletchley. Mental health and learning disability students hosted at Kettering, Northampton and Milton Keynes may undertake placements throughout Northamptonshire, depending on placement capacity. Health, social care and dental nursing Placements usually take place throughout Northamptonshire. Limited placements may be available in other localities depending on availability. Paramedic science Placements will be within the geographical area around your allocated host site. For example: If you are hosted at Northampton General Hospital, you may undertake placements in Northampton, Daventry, Towcester and surrounding areas If you are hosted at Kettering General Hospital, you may undertake placements in Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough, Rushden and surrounding areas If you are hosted in Leicester, you may undertake placements within the Leicestershire area Social work Placements will be within a 60 mile radius of the university. Podiatry If you are in your first year of podiatry, you will attend the university’s podiatry clinic for a day every week during the spring and summer terms. A 2 week national placement will take place at the end of the summer term. Second and third year podiatry students will attend the clinic for a day every 2 weeks and will also attend an external local or national placement one day every 2 weeks. Second year students will also attend a 3 week national placement at the end of the summer term. Occupational therapy Placements are held across the UK. You will also have an opportunity to undertake an international placement in your second or third year of study, subject to availability. 1 Maternity leave during health student placements If you are away from your programme for maternity reasons you must follow the suspension of studies procedures. You will usually be able to take up to a year off from your programme. Suspension of studies forms can be collected outside of Ashton 5, Park Campus. You must complete your form and have it authorised by your pathway leader. Completed forms must be submitted to the Health Student Administration Team in Ashton 5. Once your form has been processed you will receive a letter of confirmation. Maternity pay Social work students are not eligible to receive payments during maternity leave. Health students who receive a bursary are entitled to maternity pay while on maternity leave. The payment that you will receive will be the same as your normal bursary payments. Payments for childcare will stop while you are on maternity leave. Before you suspend your studies you will need to provide your maternity certificate (MAT B1 form) and complete a bursary form in person with the Health Student Placements Office staff. The Student Grants Unit usually pay up to 52 weeks maternity leave. Any leave taken after this will be unpaid. Occupational health clearance If you have given birth you must undertake a new occupational health clearance. You won’t be able to return to your placement until you have received occupational health clearance. If you take a suspension of studies for six months or more you must complete a new Criminal Records Bureau application. All required forms will be sent to you before your planned return. 2
