Assignment: Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest – RAP (Rephrase a Play)
Objective(s): SWBAT demonstrate understanding an author’s intended message and early English
vernacular by translating original text to modern, informal vernacular.
CCSS: PLEASE REFER TO STANDARDS-BASED SCORING RUBRIC.
Directions: As we read Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, there is no question that the
language used during its setting in 1890 is not the same type of language we use today. Therefore, your
group has been charged the rigorous task of doing a RAP of this “Wild-e-ly” popular play! No, I don’t mean
a rap like Kanye. RAP, or “Rephrase a Play,” is where you will reword/translate a character’s (or the
narrator’s) lines into how it might be read/said in today’s informal vernacular.
