Recognizing Efforts in Response to Hurricane Sandy
WHEREAS, beginning on October 28, 2012, and continuing through October 30, 2012,
Hurricane Sandy struck the State of New Jersey; and
WHEREAS, Hurricane Sandy produced unprecedented severe weather conditions, including
high winds, heavy rain, enormous storm surges and devastating flooding; and
WHEREAS, Hurricane Sandy destroyed entire communities across New Jersey, and left much
of the State inaccessible; and
WHEREAS, the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, including fallen trees, downed power
lines, damage to roadways, and disruptions in electrical service produced dangerous conditions
throughout the State; and
WHEREAS, Bernards Township was seriously impacted by the Hurricane, with the entire
community left without power and total restoration not occurring until November 14, 2012,
necessitating the closure of schools and businesses and the relocation of polling places for the
presidential election; and
WHEREAS, just a few short days after Hurricane Sandy, a nor’easter left four inches of snow
on Bernards Township further impeding restoration of power and return to normalcy to
Township residents; and
WHEREAS, the Township Committee wishes to recognize the dozens of first responders,
volunteers, organizations, residents and employees who rose to the occasion during and after the
Hurricane and follow-up nor’easter working long hours under difficult conditions.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the Township Committee of the Township of
Bernards that we do hereby recognize the extraordinary efforts of the following during and after
the Hurricane:


The Bernards Township Office of Emergency Management which coordinated townshipwide response to the emergency
The Liberty Corner First Aid which responded to local emergencies and also assisted in the
Hazlet/Union Beach area, Brick Township and other hard-hit South Jersey communities













The Basking Ridge Fire Company No. 1 and Rescue Squad which responded to local
emergencies as well as opening its facility as a warming and charging center, and as a
contingency polling site, with the Rescue Squad also assisted in the Hazlet/Union Beach
area, Brick Township and other hard-hit South Jersey communities
Liberty Corner Fire Company which responded to local emergencies and hosted a free
spaghetti dinner for all residents
Ridge Oak Senior Housing which housed additional polling sites
Fellowship Village which hosted additional polling sites and served as a warming center
Fellowship Deaconry which offered temporary, low cost housing for displaced citizens
The Somerset Hills YMCA which offered both of their facilities to non-members for showers
and served as a warning center
The Sisters of Christian Charity in Mendham Boro for serving as a shelter for displaced
residents
The Red Cross for setting up a temporary shelter in Bernardsville
The Hills Highlands Master Association for serving as a warming and charging center and
offering showers
NJ Senator Tom Kean, Assemblyman Jon Bramnick, Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz , US
Congressman Leonard Lance, US Senator Lautenberg and Somerset County Freeholder Mark
Caliguire, for assisting in applying pressure to JCP&L for power restoration
The Bernards Township Police Department for responding dutifully, professionally and
tirelessly to every emergency call
The Bernards Township Department of Public Works for clearing key roads at the height of
the storm enabling Emergency Responders to continue to respond to emergency calls and for
working tirelessly to clean up the township in the aftermath of the storm
The Bernards Township Municipal Staff for its creativity, flexibility and can-do attitude
NOW THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, by the Township Committee of the
Township of Bernards that we do hereby commend and thank countless other organizations and
local churches who opened their doors to citizens as power was restored to the community; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, by the Township Committee of the
Township of Bernards that we do hereby commend and thank all our citizens who demonstrated
heart-warming community spirit and compassion by looking beyond their own discomfort to
help their families, friends and neighbors during these extraordinary events.
