SUMMER COURSE IN HUNGARIAN LANGUAGE AND CIVILIZATION 2-week-courses: 18 – 31 July 2011 4-week-courses: 18 July – 12 August 2011 Ethos and Objectives The summer course in Hungarian Language and Civilization combines the pleasures of acquiring new knowledge, experiencing a new culture, making new friends, and learning a new language in a happy and relaxed environment. The program includes Hungarian as a foreign language (HFL) courses, lectures on Hungarian culture and field trips to the most famous and popular spots in Hungary. In Budapest our students can enjoy the colorful programs on offer in the Hungarian capital city and the atmosphere of an exciting European metropolis; while the field trips to the countryside provide a variety of enriching cultural experiences. The Hungarian language lessons are combined with lectures on Hungarian history, music, folk and fine arts, gastronomy as well as on the country's special position in Eastern Central Europe. The field trips connected to the lectures assist in putting the theory into practice. Students are provided with course books and useful course materials. Modern interactive teaching methodology is supported by specialized books, dictionaries and audio-visual materials. At the end of the course a certificate of participation is issued with a total of 10 ECTS credit points for the 2-week course and 20 ECTS for the 4-week-course. Levels Students participating in the summer university program can study the Hungarian language at three levels: basic, intermediate and advanced. The aim of the 50-100-lesson-language course at beginner level is that students should be capable of understanding the simplest information occurring in everyday conversations and expressing their thoughts and intentions in a similarly simple form. At intermediate and advanced levels, after a thorough placement test assessing the students' writing and oral skills, the courses start by systematizing their grammatical and lexical knowledge. Following this, the courses extend the conversational topics and grammar at a more advanced level. Students finishing the advanced course can be expected to be able to conduct a longer conversation in Hungarian, not only about essential topics of everyday life, but also about culture, economics, politics and contemporary problems.
