Learning Outcomes Revision Feedback Form

Note to Departments

Thank you for reviewing and submitting your program student learning outcomes. By ensuring programs have the most clearly and concisely written learning outcomes, assessment of these learning outcomes will be simplified—in other words, well written learning outcomes clearly outline what learning is expected of students and are much easier to assess.

Please note that the feedback below is meant to provide suggestions and assistance in revising your learning outcomes. We do not require that your department make the suggested changes, only that considering including these changes could help make assessment, evaluation, and reporting of your learning outcomes easier and more effective. This feedback is not meant to dictate any content or curriculum; we recognize and respect that your faculty’s disciplinary expertise in this process. Final learning outcome revisions are due by Monday, January 30,

2012.

After all revisions of your program student learning outcomes are completed, they will be posted on the Office of

Assessment’s website at www.ysu.edu/assessment/outcomes .

Thank you for your ongoing good work in assessment for the improvement of student learning here at YSU!

Tips on Writing/Revising Student Learning Outcomes

Good Learning Outcomes: Weak Learning Outcomes:

 Include action verbs

Reflect higher-order thinking/skills

Are measurable

Differentiate the unique aspects of student learning in each degree program

 Are simple and clear (and not too generic)

Include a reasonable number of learning outcomes

 Describe program outcomes rather than student learning outcomes

Are too vast/complex/too wordy

Include multiple outcomes in one learning outcome (watch for “and)

Are too basic

Are not measurable

Describe activities or work products rather than describe what students will learn

Do not differentiate between different levels (associate, bachelor, master, certificate)

 Can be reduced in number
