Mexichem Specialty Resins, Inc. TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE BRIEF NUMBER: 023 EQUILIBRIUM MOISTURE PICK-UP OF GEON 137 Summary: The equilibrium moisture pick-up of Geon™ 137 resin, when exposed to 80% humidity at 95F, was measured to be around 0.40 - 0.45%. Approximately 4 hours of elapsed time was required to reach equilibrium conditions. Discussion: Geon™ 137 is more hygroscopic than other Geon resins. The equilibrium moisture of Geon ™ 137 was measured in the laboratory by exposing the resin samples to 80% humidity at 95F. The equilibrium moisture was found to be approximately 0.45% (Table 1). The resin samples, after they were exposed to the above conditions, were measured for their effect on Brookfield viscosity. The higher moisture was found to reduce Brookfield viscosity by approximately 10-20%. Four samples of Geon™ 137, stored in the warehouse at Pedricktown, NJ during January/February, were also measured for moisture pick-up. The results are shown in the attached Table. All four samples had shown moisture pick-up, and one of the four samples showed moisture pick-up from 0.113% to 0.482%. Based on the results, it is evident that by the time the customer receives the resin shipment, the moisture level of Geon® 137 will be higher than reported on the Certificate of Analysis (COA).
