VOCABULARY
DEFINITION
EXAMPLE/ ILLUSTRATION
17.Air mass
A large area of air with the same temper
18. Air pressure
The force or pressure that is applied on
everything on earth caused by the weight
of the air.
A barometer measures this weather
feature
19. Chinook
A dry, warm, strong wind that blows
down the eastern slopes of the Rocky
Mountains.
Even in winter, Calgary has many of
these warm, dry winds.
20. Front
The boundary between a warm and cold
air mass. If the cold air is moving in to
replace the warm air, the front is called a
cold front. If the warm air mass is moving
in to replace the cold air, it is called a
warm front.
21. POP
A percentage measure of the Possibility of
Precipitation.
22. Humidity
A percentage measure of the amount of
moisture in the air.
23. Relative
Humidity
A percentage measure of the amount of
moisture in the air relative to the amount
the air can hold at that temperature. It is
expressed as a percentage.
Air that holds as much moisture as is
possible at a particular temperature.
24. Saturated air
25. Sky cover
A percentage measure of the amount of
sky that is clear or cloudy.
26. Wind Chill
Factor
A simple measure of the chilling effect
experienced by the human body when
strong winds are combined with freezing
temperatures. The larger the wind chill,
the faster the rate of cooling.
An artic air mass or a tropical air mass
for example
H -a high front will bring nicer weather
L -a low front will bring worsen
weather conditions
Today the possibility of precipitation is
99% so it will probably snow or rain.
Today’s humidity percentage is only 38
%
The average amount of humidity in the
summer will be higher than in winter
On a hot summer day, the air can hold
more moisture than on a cold winter
day.
Today there are partial cloudy skies
It may only be zero degrees outside
today but the wind factor makes it feel
like 40 degrees below zero
