 Describe the basic elements of music
 Recognize and identify common western instruments and voice types
 Discuss the historical and social context of western art music

2) Scantron, (882-E form) pencil and eraser for all in-class exams

III. Class Activities, Assignments, and Grading
Assignments are due at the beginning of class in typed, printed-out form unless otherwise specified.
No e-mailed assignments are accepted. The course will consist of lectures, discussions, activities,
guided listening, independent listening and examinations. Final grades will be based on the
following:
1) Attendance. Students are expected to attend class, arriving on time with appropriate
materials. No attendance points are given for late arrivals.
2) Participation Journal. In each class, participation activities will be given. You will complete
these activities in your participation journal and will turn this journal into the instructor for
grading each Thursday. Journal entries must be legible and include the date next to entry.
Some participation activities might require work outside of class.
3) Syllabus Quiz. A syllabus quiz is available on Canvas. Please check the syllabus or Canvas
schedule for due date.
4) In class tests. There are 6 in-class tests. Tests are multiple choice and include listening
examples. You must take 5 out of 6 for full credit. If you take all 6 exams, one counts as extra
credit. Make-up quizzes are not given, except with an excused absence (see attendance
section below).
5) Concert Reports. Each student will turn in two concert reports. Specific instructions will be
passed out in class.
6) Lab Hours. Lab hours are a required portion of this course. You must sign in with your
student ID for a total of 18 hours in the music lab in the basement of the Center for the Arts.
