I. Course Description and Student Goals
Music 21 is an introduction to western art music (known as classical music) from the Middle Ages
through the 20th century. Upon successful completion of this course, student will be able to:
 Describe the basic elements of music
 Recognize and identify common western classical instruments and voice types
 Discuss the historical and social context of western art music
 Distinguish and analyze various eras, forms, genres, and composers of western art music
 Communicate about western art music using proper terminology
Lectures/discussions are a significant part of this course; to understand lectures fully you will need
to keep up with the assigned reading and listening assignments for each meeting.
Additionally, there are two concert reports, which require attendance at a concert OUTSIDE of class
hours. Please be prepared to find time to spend outside of class actively listening to a live concert.
II. Class Materials
1) Mark Evan Bonds, Listen to This, 3rd Edition, published by Prentice Hall
2) Scantron, (882-E form) pencil and eraser for all in-class exams
3) Blank Journal/Notebook
III. Class Activities, Assignments, and Grading
Assignments are due at the beginning of class in typed, printed-out form unless otherwise specified.
Please refer to the syllabus schedule or Canvas calendar for due dates. No e-mailed assignments are
accepted. The course will consist of lectures, discussions, activities, guided listening, independent
listening and examinations. Final grades will be based on the following:
1) Attendance. Students are expected to attend class, arriving on time with appropriate
materials. No attendance points are given for late arrivals.
2) Participation Journal. Participation activities are given in class. You will complete these
activities in your participation journal and will turn this journal in to the instructor for
grading at several points during the term. Journal entries are handwritten (unless otherwise
specified) and must be legible and include the assignment date next to entry. Some
participation activities will require work outside of class. If you are not present the day
participation journals are turned in, you may turn your journal in to the professor at your
next available opportunity to receive credit.
3) Syllabus Contract. The last page of this syllabus shall be completed by student and turned
in according to the syllabus schedule.
4) In class tests. There are 6 in-class tests. Tests are multiple choice and include listening
examples. You must take 5 out of 6 for full credit. If you take all 6 exams, one counts as extra
credit. Make-up quizzes are not given, except with an excused absence (see attendance
section below).
5) Final Exam. There is a final exam at the given time for our class (please check the PCC
website for the final exam schedule). The final exam is multiple choice and is
comprehensive. Make-up final exams are not given, except with an excused absence (see
attendance section below).

IV. Policies
Plagiarism and academic misconduct
Academic honesty is the cornerstone of college-level education. Plagiarism is generally defined as the
act of using someone else’s ideas, words, or organization without giving them due credit. Any student
caught plagiarizing material will be prosecuted to the full extent of the College’s guidelines (see the
student handbook). You must clearly distinguish your ideas and words from the work of others
(through citing) and working with other classmates to complete assignments is prohibited, unless
otherwise specified in class.
Attendance
No attendance credit is given to late arrivals/early departures. As per college policy, you will be
dropped for four of more unexcused absences or as a result of not attending the first class session.
Unexcused absences are those for which you do not inform the instructor prior to class time and for
which you cannot provide a legitimate reason (verified illness or family emergency). Missed quizzes,
and reports cannot be made up unless you have a verified medical or family emergency and notified
the instructor before/during class. Participation points and attendance points cannot be made of,
regardless of an absences being excused or unexcused.
Late Work
If you anticipate a problem completing an assignment on time, you must contact the professor
AHEAD of the due date to request an extension. Otherwise, late work is accepted at the discretion of
the professor.
Disabilities
If you have a verified disability and believe you would benefit from reasonable accommodation, you
may wish to identify yourself to me and may do so in person or via e-mail at any time. You can
arrange for services through the Disabled Student Programs & Services in D209 (626-585-7127). If
you have questions about this, please see me or visit www.pasadena.edu/studentservices/dsps.
Student conduct in class
Personal electronic devices may not be used during class time. Computers may be used to take notes.
Any use of personal electronic devices or misuse of computers (social media, e-mail) during class will
result in dismissal from class and an unexcused absence. Practice respectful interactions in all class
communications; behavior that disrupts or disrespects the class will not be tolerated.
