I. Course Description and Student Goals
Music 21 is an introduction to western art music from the Middle Ages through the 20th century.
Upon successful completion of this course, student will be able to:
Describe the basic elements of music
Recognize and identify common western instruments and voice types
Discuss the historical and social context of western art music
Distinguish and analyze various eras, forms, genres, and composers of western art music
Communicate about western art music using proper terminology
Lectures/discussions are a significant part of this course; to understand lectures fully you will need to keep up with the assigned reading and listening assignments for each meeting.
Additionally, there are two concert reports, which require attendance at a concert OUTSIDE of class hours.
II. Class Materials
1) Mark Evan Bonds, Listen to This with online access code, 2nd Edition, published by Prentice Hall
2) Scantron, (882-E form) pencil and eraser for all in-class exams
3) Paper and writing utensil for in-class activities
Online Text Information
You must have your own access code for the online portion of our text, Listen to This. You may purchase any version of our textbook (binder form, online, bound) with the access code or you may buy the access code online (www.mypearsonstore.com). Once you purchase the code you need to register. Use the “Student Registration” document found on Canvas under “Files” to guide you.
III. Class Activities, Assignments, and Grading
Assignments are due at the beginning of class in typed, printed-out form. No e-mailed assignments are accepted. The course will consist of lectures, discussions, guided listening, independent listening and examinations. Final grades will be based on the following:
1) Attendance/Participation. Students are expected to attend class, arriving on time with appropriate materials. Participation in class activities is expected.
2) In class tests. There are a total of 6 in-class tests. Tests will be multiple choice and will including listening examples. You must take 5 out of 6 for full credit. If you take all six exams, one will count as extra credit. Make-up quizzes will not be given, except with an excused absence.
3) Online exams. Our text comes with an online resource, My Music Lab. After you have registered and signed in to My Music Lab, you will need to complete the exams under “Study Plans and Course
Content” in the folder labeled “Part Exams”. Complete exams 1-6 in the “Part Exam” folder. See the syllabus schedule for due dates. The exams can be re-taken as many times as you like BY THE DUE
DATE listed on the schedule. The exams will cover chapters we will not discuss in class. You may use your book anytime.
4) Lab Hours. Lab hours are a required portion of this course. Lab hours are a required portion of this course. You must sign in with your student ID for a total of 18 hours in the music lab in the basement of the Center for the Arts.
5) Concert Reports. Each student will turn in two concert reports. Specific instructions will be passed out in class.

Each day you come to class ON TIME is worth 9 points (4 for beginning of class, 5 for after break).
Excused absences will not receive points. Points may be based on participation in class activities.
Canvas quiz re: syllabus
You need to complete 5/6 tests for full credit. Any extra points from the 6 th quiz count as extra credit.
Each exam is 50 points. You can retake exams as many times as desired before the due date. Your highest score as of the due date will be recorded.
You must log 18 hours of lab before the final.

Attendance
No attendance credit is given to late arrivals/early departures. As per college policy, you will be dropped for four of more unexcused absences. Unexcused absences are those for which you do not inform the instructor prior to class time and for which you cannot provide a legitimate reason
(verified illness or family emergency). Notify the instructor BEFORE the class period of your absence through email. Missed quizzes, assignments, exams, reports, etc. cannot be made up unless you have a verified medical or family emergency and notified the instructor before class.

Student conduct in class
Personal electronic devices may not be used during class time and computers may only be used to take notes. Any use of personal electronic devices or misuse of computers (social media, e-mail) during class will result in dismissal and an unexcused absence for the lecture. Practice respectful interactions in all class communications; behavior that disrupts or disrespects your classmates or the instructor will not be tolerated.
