Background
Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport (LRS) is currently recruiting
young leaders to join the new ‘Team Leicestershire Elite Sports
Leadership Academy’. The Academy aims to identify and bring
together the most talented and committed young leaders from
across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland.
Selected young leaders will be provided with a years’ worth of
enhanced leadership training and opportunities, developing as
young people as well as young leaders. They will be the
workforce for School Games Championships and also act as
role
models
and
ambassadors
back
in
their
own
schools/colleges and local Leadership Academies.
Leadership Pathway Structure
'Champion': Leadership Academy
Graduates
After a successful year as an Elite Leader,
young leaders can apply to become
Champion Leaders; the champions of youth
sport and the voice of sports leadership.
'Elite': Team Leicestershire Sports Leadership
Academy
At the end of the year the most talented Advanced Leaders
can apply to progress to the Team Leicestershire
Leadership Academy. These leaders will receive enhanced
leadership training and support and will be the workforce
for School Games Championships.
'Advanced': Local Sports Leadership Academies
Talented Core Leaders can apply to join their Local Leadership Academy.
They will receive a year of training and support and will assist local
School Games competitions and access NGB leadership/officiating
courses.
'Core': School Based Leadership
Students will choose to get involved in sports volunteering and support their PE
Department. They are likely to get involved in school/college activities, after school
clubs, lunchtime sessions, school competitions, primary school activities.
Essential Criteria
Elite Young Leaders should fulfil the following criteria:
 Be a committed leader and volunteer, with the desire to
further develop their leadership skills.
 Have at least one year experience of being a positive
role model and ideally an ambassador in their local
Leadership Academy or sports club.
 Be able to communicate well with other people and
have a positive attitude.
 Attend a school/college in Leicestershire, Leicester or
Rutland.
 Aged between 16-19 years (students currently in year
11 who turn 16 this academic year are also eligible).
Skills
 Ability to lead, influence, inspire and motivate other young
people.
 Ability to lead and manage other young leaders.
 Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate
effectively with a range of people/groups.
 Ability to show initiative and take responsibility.
 Ability to show professionalism and be a positive role
model and ambassador.
 Organised with good time management skills.
 Friendly, approachable and adaptable.
Roles and Responsibilities
 To be an ambassador and role model for sport in their
school/college, local Leadership Academy or sports club.
 To get involved in a range of volunteering events and
opportunities across the county such as the School Games
Championships, with the potential to progress to regional
opportunities.
 To be committed to the programme between May 2014
and May 2015, attending a launch event on 8th May 2014
and other training and briefing events throughout the year.
 To inspire other young people to volunteer in sport.
 To promote the positive benefits of sport.
